Slow-roasted pork in Blackthorn

How our Christmas hog roast works in Blackthorn

It’s dark before 4pm in December, so we start in daylight and roast into the evening. The cooking area and path need lighting. Typical bookings include boxing Day and New Year gatherings and christmas markets, with halloumi skewers, roast turkey and hog roast rolls.

Near Blackthorn, country lanes are dark in winter, so let us know about access and lighting. The hog is roasted on site at your Christmas party, low and slow, for hours, and carved only when you’re ready to eat.

About the food

Roast pork

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Vegan guests can have a vegan burger or sausage, so everyone has something hot.

Prices and what affects them

The biggest factors are:

  • Whether you want china
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Site access
  • Numbers

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

The process

The roaster is gas-fired, so cooking doesn’t depend on mains power, though a socket nearby is handy for lighting. In December, it is dark in Blackthorn by about 3:55pm, so plan lighting for any party after mid-afternoon. We start in daylight and cook into the dark.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. We check the date and the outdoor cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. We set up under cover in daylight and roast through the afternoon.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve hot food at the agreed time.
  5. We clear away, even on a dark, wet evening.

Before we arrive

  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Think about shelter for your guests
