Christmas hog roast in Donkey Town, carved to order

December dates book up early, especially Fridays, so ask early. We serve halloumi skewers, roast potatoes and crackling, and we are regularly asked to cater festive family get-togethers and between-Christmas-and-New-Year get-togethers.

Near Donkey Town, country lanes are dark in winter, so tell us about the route and lighting at the spot. Everything is cooked on the day, at your venue, low and slow, for hours.

The process

We cook on a gas-fired roaster, so cooking doesn’t depend on mains power, though a socket nearby is handy for lighting. Sunset in Donkey Town in late December is about 3:55pm, so even a late-afternoon Christmas party needs lighting by the roaster and the serving table. We set up in daylight and roast into the evening.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. We check the date and the outdoor cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. We set up under cover in daylight and roast through the afternoon.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve hot food at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we pack up and leave the spot tidy.

Preparing for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

Planners, venues and businesses

Marquee hire companies frequently have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Booking for a club or group? One clear contact makes everything easier, particularly when timings shift.

Should I cook it myself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Firm ground rather than soft lawn
  • Parking near the cooking area
  • A safe distance from anything that could catch the heat

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

From the roaster

  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Crackling
  • Vegan option (Ve)
  • Roast potatoes
  • Salads
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Roast turkey

How to compare hog roast caterers

Donkey Town: your questions answered

Could you cook in Brentmoor Heath?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What’s the nearest station to Donkey Town?

Bagshot station, about 2.3 miles north-west of the centre.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Can the food be served indoors?

The roaster stays outside under cover; guests can eat inside.

When should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: use our quote form.

Can you do gluten-free?

We can provide gluten-free rolls if you ask. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

Will there be enough to go round?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will talk it through when we quote.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

No, the roast is always cooked outdoors under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. We can often serve indoors if the venue agrees.

What affects the price in Donkey Town

Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • The number of people
  • How long the roast and service take
  • Site access

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so we list each one in the quote. A simple menu keeps the cost down.
