Slow-roasted pork in The Moor

Film set catering in The Moor, carved to order

On a long shoot day near The Moor, a hot lunch on time matters. A hog roast works well at base: we roast from early and carve on the call. For unit base lunches and period drama shoots, we will put together a menu of spit-roast lamb, new potatoes and halloumi skewers and more.

Rural locations near The Moor can be a long way from food, so hot food at base is a big help. We bring plates as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

How the day works

Expect a calm, organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, set up where we have agreed, and get on with roasting and serving. By late September, sunset near The Moor is about 7:00pm, so plan lights for evening service.

  1. Send us the location, dates and lunch time.
  2. We confirm access and send a price.
  3. The roast starts early.
  4. We serve when lunch is called.
  5. We clear our spot.

How to prepare

  • Think about shelter for your crew
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

Organising for someone else?

If you are a venue or event planner, we are happy to work alongside your team, sharing timings and a site plan.

For workplace bookings, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We will fit in with site rules.

Planning for dietary needs

Tell us about dietary needs early and we will help. Some ideas:

  • Tell us who doesn’t eat pork
  • Label the alternatives clearly
  • Collect crew dietary needs from the call sheet
  • Halal isn’t offered

We follow location rules on vehicles and timings.

Ask for gluten-free rolls.

Questions from The Moor

Is The Moor too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Could you cook in Collingwood Nature Reserve?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first.

What does the production need from you?

Every production is different.

What about locations off the beaten track?

We can, given access details. Let us know about the route.

What about crew who do not eat pork?

We can add chicken, lamb or vegetarian options.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, and a way to wheel everything in. A photo helps.

How far ahead should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. For other dates, a few weeks can be enough. Ask and we’ll check.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We do not offer halal meat.

Planning a shoot in The Moor

The Moor is about 12 miles north of Hastings, in Kent. We cater shoots across The Moor and nearby. The Moor is one of 922 towns and villages in Kent where we cater. Our bookings stretch from The Moor to Canterbury (about 30 miles away).

Crew coming by rail can use the station: Etchingham station, about 3.3 miles south-west, is the nearest station. Among the historic houses close to The Moor are Great Dixter (4.8 miles south-east). If you’re shooting at a historic house, the roaster will need a base agreed with the property. The High Weald National Landscape is within about 5 miles of The Moor, so check cooking and vehicle rules with locations.

For shoots in TN18, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and a serving time. That could mean a shoot in a garden on The Moor, Pipers Lane and The Chestnuts or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere outside to cook. Close by, we cover shoots in Hawkhurst (1 mile north-east), Little Conghurst (1 mile east), Pipsden (1 mile north-east), Four Throws (1 mile east) and Beal's Green (1 mile north). What affects the price in The Moor

We work out each quote from:

  • The journey to the venue
  • How long the roast and service take
  • Menu choices and extras
  • How many people are eating

When comparing prices, compare the same things: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.
