California questions
Is California close to London?
Roughly 35 miles from the centre of London, and well within our area.
Could you cook in Shepperlands Farm Nature Reserve?
Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first.
What if things run late?
Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and we can hold the roast for a while if the day runs behind.
Is there a non-pork option?
Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We do not offer halal meat.
How far ahead should we book?
Summer Saturdays and December book up first. For other dates, a few weeks can be enough. Ask and we will check.
Do you provide china?
Plates come as standard. If you’d like china, ask and we will add it to the quote.
What paperwork do you provide?
Organisers often ask for a risk assessment or gas safety details. Let us know what you need.
What comes with the hog roast?
The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.
About our hog roast for events in California
Organisers need traders who turn up and serve well. We are self-contained and leave the pitch tidy. Popular choices include crackling, hog roast rolls and a vegan burger or sausage, and we are regularly asked to cater fundraising events and country shows.
Near California, events may be far from shops and cafés, so a hog roast goes down well. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

Should I cook it myself?
Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.
If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.
The process
People love watching the carving: the hog is carved in front of your visitors, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. Late-May events in California have light until about 8:55pm, and midsummer ones until about 9:25pm. After dark, the stall needs lighting.
- It starts with your event date, site and expected numbers.
- We check access to the pitch and send a price.
- We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting.
- We serve to order through the event.
- Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.
Getting ready for the day
- Give us final numbers a week or so before
- Name a contact for the day
- Have a covered area for eating in case of rain

Prices and what affects them
Each price is built from:
- Travel to California
- Season and day of the week
- The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
- Site access
Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.
What we need to know
For a quick, accurate price, tell us:
- Allergies we should know about
- Your date and serving time
- Where the event is
- Rules from the venue or landowner
When you are weighing up caterers, check what each quote actually includes. Ours lists it clearly. For a quote, send us your details through our quote form.

Next to volunteers cooking, a professional hog roast frees up your helpers. Numbers make the biggest difference: bigger groups generally cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.
