A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with cold food stalls, hot food is popular in any season. Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Why book our hog roast in Cooling

  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Served at the time you choose
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • Crackling for everyone who wants it

How our hog roast for events works in Cooling

At a fun run or tournament, a hog roast feeds hungry competitors. Popular choices include crackling, hog roast rolls and rotisserie chicken, and we are regularly asked to cater club events and country shows.

A fête near Cooling might be on a field with no mains power; the roaster runs on gas, so that’s fine. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

The process

We get there well ahead of service, because a whole hog takes hours to roast. The smell generally brings people over long before we carve. Late-September events in Cooling lose the light at about 7:00pm, so evening trading needs lights.

  1. Organisers send us the event details.
  2. We check the pitch and paperwork and quote.
  3. The roast starts before the gates open.
  4. We carve to order through the day.
  5. We pack down and take our waste.

Getting ready for the day

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand

Allergies and dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing normally contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Check other traders are not all selling pork
  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Gluten-free rolls can be brought on request
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten

At the end, we pack down and take our waste.

Chicken widens the choice.

Planning the cooking spot

Most outdoor spaces can work if a few things are right. Here’s what we look for:

  • Space away from marquees, stalls and trees
  • Flat, firm ground for the roaster
  • A queuing area

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

What we serve

  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Coleslaw
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Crackling
  • Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

What a hog roast costs

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Whether you want china
  • The date and time of year
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Access to the cooking area

Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Ask us and we will suggest the best fit for your budget.

The menu, dish by dish

Stuffing and apple sauce

A spoonful of apple sauce and a slice of stuffing make the roll, just as they should.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: crisp, golden and full of flavour.

Full catering or machine hire?

You could go for a cold buffet, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

Your questions about a hog roast for your event in Cooling

Is Cooling too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Which station is closest to Cooling?

The closest is Higham station, roughly 3.3 miles away.

What’s the price?

Every booking is quoted individually, depending on numbers, menu, timings and travel. Tell us about your event for a quote.

Is there a non-pork option?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We don’t offer halal meat.

Is mains power needed?

The roaster runs on gas, so we do not need mains power to cook. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

What will our event need from you?

Tell us what your event requires, and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

No, the roast is always cooked outdoors under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

How soon do you get booked up?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. For other dates, a few weeks can be enough. Send your date and we will check.

For event organisers in Cooling

  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
