Hog roast for events near Elsted

For organisers, one reliable hot-food trader makes life easier. We bring everything, roast on the pitch and leave it clean. Whether it’s summer fêtes and fun runs and sports events, we can cook hog roast rolls, apple sauce and crackling for your visitors.

At a field event near Elsted, power and water may be limited; we cook on gas, so we don’t need mains power. The carving happens right in front of your visitors, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Elsted events: pitches and permissions

Elsted is about 5 miles south-east of Petersfield, in West Sussex. We cover events in Elsted. We bring hog roasts to 371 places across West Sussex. We cater events right across the region, from Elsted to Guildford (22 miles away).

Within about 2 miles is the South Downs National Park, where events may have extra rules on cooking and waste; we’ll follow the site’s requirements.

For events in GU29, we just need to know where the roaster can cook. We also bring hog roasts to events in East Harting (1 mile west), Elsted Marsh (1 mile north-east), Didling (1 mile south-east), Nyewood (2 miles north-west) and Dumpford (2 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Bognor Regis (14 miles south-east), Chichester (9 miles south), Emsworth (9 miles south-west), Portfield (10 miles south), Yapton (14 miles south-east) and East Wittering (14 miles south).

A little further out are Midhurst Community Hospital (4.7 miles east). The countryside around Elsted includes Iping and Stedham Commons and Oakham Hill.

  • Pubs nearby include The Three Horseshoes Public House (within half a mile east)

Should I cook it myself?

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

For event organisers in Elsted

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it’s worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

Venues frequently have rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Ask early, and pass on anything they need from us.

Looking after everyone

Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Show allergens at the stall
  • Signpost the stall clearly
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if you expect coeliac visitors
  • Remember stuffing generally contains gluten

We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting, timed for the gates opening.

Elsted: your questions answered

Do you cater at venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Is Elsted close to London?

About 49 miles from central London, and we cover it as standard.

Can you sell directly to visitors?

Both models are possible. We will agree what suits yours.

Can you come to our fête?

We do. Send us the details.

Can you come to a PTA fair?

Yes, if the school agrees. Send us the details.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

We work back from when you want to eat, and we can hold the roast for a while if the day runs behind.

What paperwork do you provide?

Requirements vary. Share your list and we’ll respond.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

Outside, always. The food can be carried in and served indoors where the venue allows.

Step by step

Slow roasting is the whole point: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Late-May events in Elsted have light until about 8:55pm, and midsummer ones until about 9:20pm. Evening festivals need lighting by the stall after that.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We serve to order through the event.
  5. Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains

Space, access and the venue

  • Access for our vehicle to the pitch
  • Room for a queue that does not block paths
  • Your trader requirements

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before booking.

The menu, dish by dish

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Soft rolls hold the pork, stuffing and apple sauce together, easy to eat standing up. Ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Vegetarians get halloumi and vegetable skewers, a hot, filling option of their own.

Prices and what affects them

There is no fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • Distance from us
  • Numbers
  • Access to the cooking area

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so we list each one in the quote. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

What to tell us

To check the date and the space, tell us:

  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Rough numbers
  • Any venue rules

To get a quote, just tell us the date, where the event is and roughly how many. A picture of the cooking area helps. Fill in our quote form.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
