Itchen events: pitches and permissions

Itchen is about 2 miles south-east of Southampton, in Southampton. We take a hog roast for your event to gardens, car parks, yards and venues around Itchen. We bring hog roasts to all 40 towns and villages in Southampton.

If your event is in Houndwell Park, the organiser will need the landowner’s permission for hot-food traders and vehicles. For a church fête or fundraiser, at a church such as Jesus Chapel - St Mary Extra, a hog roast adds hot food to the cakes and tombola. Within about 7 miles is the New Forest National Park, where events may have extra rules on cooking and waste; we’ll follow the site’s requirements. With the sea within about 2 miles, we plan shelter from the wind for coastal events.

Wherever your event is in SO19 and SO14, we can bring the roaster to you. Local streets include Sea Road, Oak Road and West Road; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Itchen sits on or near the A3025, which makes travel to your event easy. Nearby, we also cater events in Peartree Green (1 mile north-west), Northam (1 mile north-west), Sholing (1 mile east), Bitterne (1 mile north-east) and St Mary's (1 mile west). Further out, we also cater in Shirley (3 miles north-west), Regents Park (3 miles west), Maybush (4 miles north-west), Coxford (4 miles north-west), Freemantle (3 miles west) and Lordswood (4 miles north-west). As one of the bigger places in Southampton, Itchen has lots of places with room for a hog roast.

Nearby you’ll also find Bitterne Local History Society Heritage And Research Centre (0.9 miles north) and Marlands Shopping Centre (1.6 miles west). Open spaces near Itchen include Netley Common.

Our full booking checklist

Itchen: your questions answered

Can you come to a school fair in Itchen?

Yes, if the school is happy for a hog roast on site. Send us the date and where the roaster would go.

Which station is closest to Itchen?

Itchen has its own station: Woolston station.

Is mains power needed?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

What comes with the hog roast?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.

Is it pay as you go?

It depends on how your event works. Let us know how you’d like it to work and we’ll talk it through.

Can you cater in Itchen?

Yes. We cater across London and the South East, Itchen and the rest of Southampton included. Tell us the venue and we’ll quote.

What if it rains?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Can we just hire the roaster?

We do, if you’re happy to roast and carve yourself. Ask and we will talk you through it.

What we serve, dish by dish

Crackling

Crackling takes hours to get right, and a whole hog roasted slowly gets it just right.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Rolls make a hog roast easy to eat anywhere. Gluten-free rolls can be provided on request.

Looking after everyone

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Show allergens at the stall
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if you expect coeliac visitors
  • Tell us what the event asks of traders
  • Let us know if many visitors are vegetarian

We work to your event plan, including vehicle times and pitch layout.

Coleslaw goes well with pork rolls.

Space, access and the venue

It’s worth planning the cooking area in advance. The ideal spot has:

  • Clearance from other stalls and tents
  • Space for people to queue
  • Permission for cooking on the site

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Coleslaw

How it works

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Late-May events in Itchen have light until about 8:55pm, and midsummer ones until about 9:25pm. Evening festivals need lighting by the stall after that.

  1. You tell us the event, the pitch and the expected crowd.
  2. We check the pitch and any paperwork, then quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting.
  4. We serve to order through the event.
  5. We pack down, take our waste and leave the pitch clean.

Preparing for the day

  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Think about shelter for your visitors
  • Have a level outdoor spot ready

Prices and what affects them

We don’t use a fixed price list, because every event is different. The main factors are:

  • Numbers
  • Distance from us
  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Access to the cooking area

When comparing prices, compare the same things: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

What we need to know

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Where the event is

Send us the date, the address or SO19 postcode and rough numbers, along with your serving time. We will check the date and send a quote. Send us your details through our quote form.

Working with your venue

Event organisers frequently ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

If the event is on someone else’s land, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
