Hog roast for events near Play Hatch
At a fête, fair or festival in Play Hatch, a hog roast stall draws a crowd. We roast on the pitch through the day and carve rolls to order, keeping the queue moving. Typical bookings include small festivals and car and steam shows, serving hog roast rolls, rotisserie chicken and crackling.
A fête near Play Hatch might be on a field with no mains power; the roaster runs on gas, so that is fine. Timings are planned around your event, because the roast has to start hours before you eat, so the food is ready at the right moment.

What else we do in Play Hatch
DIY versus a catered hog roast
Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.
Full catering or machine hire? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.
Planning the cooking spot
Planning the cooking spot is the key. Check these:
- Your trader requirements
- Room for a queue that does not block paths
- Clearance from other stalls and tents
If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.
Popular choices
- Hog roast rolls
- Rotisserie chicken
- Coleslaw
- Crackling
- Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)
- Stuffing and apple sauce
- Halloumi skewers (V)
A hog roast or other catering?
Next to volunteers cooking, we take the cooking off your volunteers. Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, which is why each one gets its own quote.

Play Hatch: your questions answered
Is Play Hatch too small for a hog roast?
No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.
Can you come to a school fair in Play Hatch?
Yes, if the school is happy for a hog roast on site. Tell us the date and pitch details.
Can you sell directly to visitors?
That depends on the event. Let us know how you’d like it to work and we will talk it through.
Can a hog roast raise money?
Contact us and we’ll see what’s possible.
What happens in bad weather?
We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.
What if things run late?
We’ll be as flexible as we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will fit around changes.
Do you offer gluten-free rolls?
Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.
Can you cater for vegetarians?
Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We don’t offer halal meat.
Step by step
When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. At midsummer, events in Play Hatch stay light until about 9:25pm, so evening trading usually finishes in daylight in high summer. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, the pitch needs lighting.
- Start with the date and numbers.
- We agree how food will be paid for.
- We roast on the pitch.
- We serve rolls quickly.
- We tidy the pitch.
Preparing for the day
- Choose someone to meet us on arrival
- Think about shelter for your visitors
- Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
