Planning a hog roast in Dunkirk

Dunkirk is about 4 miles south-east of Faversham, in Kent. We bring a hog roast to events anywhere in Dunkirk, as long as there is an outdoor spot to cook. We bring hog roasts to all 922 towns and villages across Kent.

After a service at Christ Church, the hog roast can be ready at a nearby hall or house. A green space like Mount Ephraim Gardens is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s. Dunkirk is within about 8 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape, and some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles on site. Check your venue’s rules on outside caterers. The coast is within about 6 miles of Dunkirk, and sea breezes can be strong. We think about wind when choosing the cooking spot and putting up the cover.

We cover events in every part of the ME13 postcode area. Your event could be at a house on London Road and Courtenay Road, as long as there is somewhere outside to cook. Neighbouring places where we cater events include Boughton under Blean (1 mile west), Winterbourne (1 mile south-west), Hickmans Green (1 mile west), Oversland (1 mile south-west) and South Street (2 miles south-west). We also serve nearby towns such as Ashford (12 miles south-west), Canterbury (5 miles east), Sittingbourne (11 miles west), Whitstable (5 miles north-east), Faversham (4 miles north-west) and Herne Bay (9 miles north-east).

A little further out are Chilham Castle (3.5 miles south) and Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr (4.4 miles east). Within reach you’ll find Blean Woods RSPB Reserve.

  • Local pubs include The Red Lion pub (0.5 miles east)

A hog roast or other catering?

Catered or DIY? With catering we roast, carve and serve; with hire you do the cooking. Most hosts choose catering for anything bigger than a family party. A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

What you get with us

  • Crackling for everyone who wants it
  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to
  • Timed around your day

Read our pricing and our hog roast cost guide.

Planners, venues and businesses

For events on land you don’t own, such as a park or field, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Let us know what your event requires and we will tell you what we can send.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

Some guests will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance

Let us know if the day runs late: a cooked roast can be held for a while before carving.

China crockery is available on request, at an extra cost.

Should I cook it myself?

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

FAQs for Dunkirk

Can you do a hog roast in Mount Ephraim Gardens?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Do you cater at venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.

What do people get?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Will people get crackling?

It is: slow roasting crisps the skin and we break it up for everyone.

How do you work out quantities?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we’ll talk it through when we quote.

What’s the price?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we’ll send a price.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Can we choose catered or DIY?

You can have us cook, or hire the machine. We will explain what’s included in each when we quote.

A closer look at the menu

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb cooks slowly like the hog, carved to order at the serving station, often with mint sauce.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

A plant-based burger or sausage covers vegans, served in a roll with salads.

How we price a hog roast

We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • Season and day of the week
  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • How many people are eating

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. Every event gets its own quote, with everything listed.

What we need to know

To get the best quote, tell us:

  • Roughly how many people
  • Dietary requirements
  • The venue or postcode
  • Which meats and sides you’d like

For a quote, send us a few details: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Send us your details through our quote form.

How it works

Expect a calm, organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, use the cooking spot you’ve chosen, and roast, carve and serve without fuss. By late September, sunset in Dunkirk is around 7:00pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:50pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

Preparing for the day
