A hog roast or other catering?

A hog roast has one downside: it’s pork. So we offer lamb, chicken and vegetarian and vegan choices too for anyone who does not eat it. Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

What you get with us

  • Carved to order by a chef
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside

Hog roast hire for your event in West Reading

A hog roast is one of the simplest ways to feed a crowd in West Reading: a single slow roast, carved to order. We bring the roaster, the cover and the serving kit, and we serve and tidy up afterwards. For wakes and memorial gatherings and weddings, day or evening, we will put together a menu of halloumi skewers, rotisserie chicken and salads.

In a smaller place like West Reading, a hog roast in the garden is often the simplest option: plenty of room, no hire fees and nobody stuck in the kitchen. Let us know how we reach the garden. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

West Reading: venues, access and local tips

West Reading is about 1 mile north-west of Reading, in Reading. West Reading is well within our area for events. We cover all 34 towns and villages in Reading, from the larger towns to small villages.

Churches such as Church of St Mark rarely have room for a roaster, but a hall or home close by typically does. Within reach of West Reading are historic houses such as Mapledurham House (2.8 miles north-west). If your event is at a historic house or estate, check its rules on outside caterers and gas cooking early.

Events anywhere in RG30, RG1 and RG31 start with an outdoor spot for the roaster and roughly how many guests. Streets in the area include Lundy Lane, Wilson Road and Wilton Road, and an event on any of them works with a garden, drive or yard for the roaster. West Reading sits on or near the A4, so getting the roaster to your event is simple. For events just outside West Reading, we cover Coley Park (1 mile south-east), Reading (1 mile south-east), Caversham Heights (2 miles north), Lower Caversham (2 miles north-east) and Green Park (2 miles south). Further out, we also cater in Shinfield (4 miles south-east), Arborfield Garrison (6 miles south-east), Whitley Wood (3 miles south-east), Sonning Common (4 miles north), Caversham Park Village (3 miles north-east) and Sonning (4 miles east). • Nearby schools include The WREN School (0.5 miles south-west)

Working with your venue

How we price a hog roast

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Whether you want china
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • How long the roast and service take

Distance is part of the price: we include travel in the quote, with any London charges listed. Tell us the exact address so the quote is accurate.

What we need to know

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Useful details:

  • A picture of the cooking area
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • An estimate of numbers
  • Anything the venue has asked for

Not sure how many to cater for? A rough figure is fine for a first quote, and you can confirm nearer the time. Use our quote form.

Questions from West Reading

Can you do a hog roast in Round Copse?

Only if the landowner, typically the council, allows it. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

We are gathering after a service at Church of St Mark: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is typically served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Do you come to West Reading?

Yes. We cater across London and the South East, including West Reading and Reading. Tell us the venue and we will quote.

Can you work around our timings?

We work back from when you want to eat, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, and a way to wheel everything in. A photo helps.

How soon do you get booked up?

As early as you can for summer weekends and December. Quieter dates can frequently be booked at shorter notice. Send your date and we will check.

What should we sort out beforehand?

Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

Yes, for confident cooks. We will explain the details with your quote.

Before you choose a spot

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Vehicle access close to the cooking area
  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • Any venue rules sorted in advance

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.

What happens on the day

It’s a relaxed, well-organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, set up where we’ve agreed, and roast, carve and serve without fuss. In West Reading, the sun sets at about 9:25pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so summer evening service is usually in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We pack away and leave you to it.

Before we arrive

  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Let us know about tight access

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb cooks slowly like the hog, carved to order at the serving station, often with mint sauce.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Allergies and dietary needs

Not everyone eats pork, so plan an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Add a dietary question to your invitations
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

If timings shift, tell us: we can hold the roast for a while.

Sides turn a roll into a proper meal.

  • Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
