Party hog roast for Cold Ash

Organising for someone else?

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it’s worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

How our party hog roast works in Cold Ash

For a relaxed party, you can hire the machine and cook it yourself. Most people choose the catered option, so they can enjoy the party. We’re frequently asked to cater naming ceremonies and getting-engaged parties, with hog roast rolls, crackling and coleslaw.

What happens on the day

Carving is part of the show: our chef carves the pork in front of the queue, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. Sunset in Cold Ash is about 8:55pm in late May and 9:25pm in late June, so most summer parties eat in daylight. Winter parties, dark by about 4:00pm, need lights by the roaster.

Planning a party in Cold Ash

Before you choose a spot

Most outdoor spaces can work if a few things are right. Here’s what helps:

  • Parking close to the house
  • Somewhere dry for guests to eat
  • A side gate or passage wide enough to wheel the equipment

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly before you book.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to a barbecue, you’re not stuck flipping burgers all afternoon, and everyone eats together. Numbers make the biggest difference: the price per head generally falls as numbers rise, since much of the cost is fixed.

Why Cold Ash hosts choose us

  • Planned to your running order
  • No surprises: everything in writing
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated

Planning for dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Tell us how many vegetarians and vegans to expect
  • Collect dietary needs when guests reply
  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Check the allergen list, as stuffing usually contains gluten

We set up where we agreed and stay out of the way, leaving the garden to you and your guests.

A string of lights by the carving station looks great as it gets dark.

Full catering or machine hire?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

Cold Ash: your questions answered

Is Cold Ash close to London?

Roughly 51 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Do you cater at venues in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Do you do DIY hire for parties?

Yes, DIY machine hire is available. We’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works.

Is clearing up included?

We tidy the serving area.

Is mains power needed?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

Do you bring a gazebo?

Not for the cooking, but plan somewhere dry for guests.

How much will it be?

Each event is priced on its own, based on numbers, menu, service time and distance. Ask us for a quote.

Is there a non-pork option?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. Please note we don’t offer halal meat.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
