Choosing a hog roast caterer

Wedding hog roast near Charcott

A slow roast suits a wedding day that runs late: it can be held for a while once cooked, so the food copes with a delayed running order. For weddings in a marquee and intimate weddings, we will put together a menu of rotisserie chicken, carved roast pork and new potatoes and more.

There’s something special about a country wedding near Charcott, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan a firm route in, especially if it rains. You will know what’s included before booking: the date, the serving time, the menu and the plates.

Full catering or machine hire?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

How we price a hog roast for your wedding

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • The journey to the venue
  • Access to the cooking area

Compare like for like: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

Details that help

To get the best quote, tell us:

  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • Dietary requirements
  • Where the event is
  • Anything the venue has asked for

We price every booking individually, because numbers, menu, serving time and travel vary. Tell us about your wedding for a quote: send us your details through our quote form.

Charcott questions

Can you cater after a service at Church of St Luke?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

Do you come out to small places like Charcott?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Do you clear up?

We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.

Is a hog roast enough for a wedding?

With sides, it’s a full wedding breakfast; in the evening, rolls on their own work well.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. Serving inside is frequently possible, with the venue’s agreement.

When do you start roasting?

A whole hog roasts for several hours, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

Do you need power or water?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. Power can help with lighting after dark.

What if our venue has its own caterer?

Many do, but some only allow approved caterers or charge a fee. Ask your venue early, and we’ll work with them on the details.

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Give your coordinator the final menu
  • Collect dietary needs with RSVPs
  • Give final numbers in good time

For evening food, we carve as the dancing gets going, timed with you in advance.

For a sit-down meal, ask for china, as an extra.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Some couples have a formal meal and a hog roast in the evening; others make the hog roast the main meal. Travel matters for the price: travel is included in your quote, with any London charges listed. Give us the address so the quote is accurate.

The process

When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, worked back from your serving time. In Charcott, midsummer sunset is about 9:20pm, and by late September it’s nearer 7:05pm, which means an evening hog roast is usually served in daylight in high summer. For autumn and winter weddings, when it’s dark by about 3:55pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. We agree arrival, cooking spot and serving times with you and your venue.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

Getting ready for the day

  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Check there’s a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Send final numbers in good time

Organising for someone else?

Event organisers often ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so check before booking. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
