Portsmouth Point: your questions answered

Can you cater after a service at Portsmouth Garrison church?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Can you roast near the sea around Portsmouth Point?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Can we have both pork and lamb?

Of course: lamb and pork together give guests a choice.

Do we need extra food?

Quantities are based on your guest list, and the quote lists everything.

How big a hog will we need?

We size the roast to your numbers, so tell us your best estimate. We’ll confirm the menu in the quote.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. Send us a photo if you’re unsure.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

Yes. We serve it on plates with salads and potatoes, with china available, and our staff serve your guests.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We do not offer halal meat.

About our wedding hog roast in Portsmouth Point

After hours of dancing, guests are hungry. Rolls with roast pork and crackling are just the thing, and they’re easy to eat with a drink in hand. Whether it’s evening food after the first dance and weddings in a marquee, we can cook salads, spit-roast lamb and crackling and more.

Weddings in a place like Portsmouth Point frequently feel personal: a local church, then a marquee in a garden or field. The roaster cooks a safe distance from the marquee. Tell us about access to the field or garden. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling.

What a hog roast costs

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • Whether you want china
  • The date and time of year

Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, along with distance and how easy the site is. There’s no one-size price, so we quote each one individually.

What to tell us

To check availability and the cooking area, we’ll need:

  • Dietary requirements
  • Roughly how many people
  • What the outdoor space is like
  • Your menu choices

If you’re comparing hog roast caterers for Portsmouth Point, ask each one exactly what’s included. Ours lists it clearly. For a quote, send us your details through our quote form.

How to compare hog roast caterers

About the food

Roast pork

The hog roasts slowly for hours, so the meat is tender and juicy, and our chef carves it to order.

Stuffing and apple sauce

Sharp, sweet apple sauce and savoury sage and onion stuffing go with the pork perfectly. Stuffing normally contains gluten.

A hog roast or other catering?

If your venue has an in-house caterer, check whether you can bring in a hog roast. There may be a fee. Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so we list each one in the quote. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Why book our hog roast in Portsmouth Point

  • Planned to your running order
  • Carved by our chef in front of your guests
  • All the equipment comes with us
  • Choices for people who do not eat pork

Allergies and dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Collect dietary needs with RSVPs
  • If any guests need halal food, arrange it separately
  • Give your coordinator the final menu
  • Count non-pork eaters, for lamb, chicken or a vegetarian choice

We will liaise with your venue coordinator, for access and timings.

For a sit-down meal, ask for china, quoted separately.

How it works

On the day, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. In Portsmouth Point, midsummer sunset is about 9:20pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:10pm, so evening food is often carved in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it is dark by about 4:00pm.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and whether it’s the wedding breakfast, the evening or both.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

Getting ready for the day

  • Think about shelter for your guests
  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

For planners, venues and organisers

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers.

Marquee suppliers generally set distances for cooking equipment, so tell them a hog roast is coming. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Space, access and the venue

Planning the cooking spot is the key. Check these:

  • Serving inside the marquee or barn if allowed
  • A level, open cooking spot outside the marquee or barn
  • Space well clear of tents and trees

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.
