How our Christmas hog roast works in Herne

Roast turkey can join the pork for a traditional touch, with roast potatoes on the side. There are options for people who do not eat pork. Typical bookings include new Year parties and winter fairs and markets, with crackling, roast potatoes and rotisserie chicken.

In Herne, festive gatherings tend to be at home or the hall. The roaster needs a lit spot and firm ground. You will know what’s included before you book: serving times, the menu, staff and anything else agreed, with no surprises on the day.

Planning the cooking spot

Most gardens, car parks, yards and fields work with a little planning. Here’s what we look for:

  • A level spot outdoors with lighting nearby
  • Clearance from walls and tents
  • A hall, office or heated marquee for guests

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

Herne: your questions answered

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes, of course. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Which station is closest to Herne?

Herne Bay station, about 1.2 miles north-west of the centre.

Do we need to provide electricity?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. Power can help with lighting after dark.

What comes with the hog roast?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

What about Christmas markets?

We do. Hot food is always popular at winter fairs.

What’s the price?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Send us the details and we will quote.

What happens after service?

Our staff clear the serving area, so you’re not left with the mess.

Is crockery included?

Plates come as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

Catered or do it yourself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

What comes off the roaster

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Halloumi and vegetable skewers are the vegetarian choice: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Salads, new potatoes, coleslaw and roast or jacket potatoes turn rolls into a full meal.

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what affects the price:

  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Plates or china
  • The date and time of year
  • How long the roast and service take

Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

What we need to know

To get the best quote, send us:

  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • The venue or postcode
  • The date and time of the event
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture

We need a few details to quote: the date and serving time, the venue or CT6 postcode, rough numbers and which extras you’d like. Send us your details through our quote form.

The process

On the day, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, worked back from your serving time. In December, it’s dark in Herne by about 3:50pm, so plan lighting for any party after mid-afternoon. We start in daylight and cook into the dark.

  1. It starts with your date, venue and rough numbers.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We set up under cover in daylight and roast through the afternoon.
  4. We carve and serve hot when you are ready.
  5. We clear away, even on a dark, wet evening.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
