Slow-roasted pork in Horton

Christmas hog roast in Horton, slow-roasted on site

At a Christmas fair or lights switch-on in Horton, a hog roast draws a queue: hot food in the hand on a cold evening. We serve roast turkey, crackling and halloumi skewers, and we are regularly asked to cater staff Christmas do’s and boxing Day and New Year gatherings.

In winter near Horton, we need firm ground and light, as fields are frequently soft. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we’ll tell you exactly what’s in each dish before booking.

Should I cook it myself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Allergies and dietary needs

Most people love a hog roast, but it’s pork. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Find out who’d prefer turkey or chicken
  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Share the allergen information in advance
  • Keep vegetarian food labelled

A cooked roast holds for a while, so keep us posted.

Roast turkey can be added.

What we serve, dish by dish

Roast pork

We carve as we serve, which keeps it hot and moist right to the last roll.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: crisp, golden and full of flavour, straight off the hog.

Horton: your questions answered

Do you come out to small places like Horton?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

What’s the nearest station to Horton?

Sunnymeads station, about 1 mile west of the centre.

What space does the roaster need?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We will check it with you before booking.

When do you start roasting?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

What if things run late?

We will be as flexible as we can. Give us a contact on the day and we’ll adjust.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

Do you come to Horton?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, Horton and the rest of Slough included. Tell us the venue and we will quote.

Can you do turkey for a Christmas party?

We can: add turkey to the menu.

What happens on the day

Rain doesn’t stop the roast, because we cook under cover. It’s worth planning a sheltered place for people to eat, too. Sunset in Horton in late December is about 3:55pm, so plan lighting for any party after mid-afternoon. We set up in daylight and roast into the evening.

  1. It starts with your date, venue and rough numbers.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We set up under cover in daylight and roast through the afternoon.
  4. The team serves hot rolls at the agreed time.
  5. We tidy up and go, whatever the weather.

Preparing for the day

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

What affects the price in Horton

Each price is built from:

  • Numbers
  • The date and time of year
  • The journey to the venue
  • Time on site

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. Every event gets its own quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

What to tell us

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what to include:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • Dietary requirements
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo

Send us the date, the address or SL3 postcode and rough numbers, along with your serving time. We will check the date and send a quote. Send us your details through our quote form.

Planners, venues and businesses

For events on land you don’t own, such as a park or field, you’ll need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

If you’re planning an event on someone’s behalf, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, let us know who we’ll deal with on the day. We will keep you both updated.
