Christmas hog roast in Soberton, slow-roasted on site

We plan for winter weather: we cook under cover, and guests eat somewhere warm. A hall, office or marquee works well. Whether it’s club and society Christmas parties and christmas lights switch-ons, we can cook apple sauce, roast turkey and crackling.

In a small place like Soberton, December lanes are dark, so let us know about access and lighting. We bring the people to serve and clear up, so nobody in your party has to serve.

What the cooking area needs

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Ideally:

  • A firm surface, as winter grass can be soft
  • Somewhere warm and dry for guests to eat
  • A level outdoor area that can be lit

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before booking.

The process

It is a relaxed, well-organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, set up where we’ve agreed, and get on with roasting and serving. Sunset in Soberton in late December is about 4:00pm, so even a late-afternoon Christmas party needs lighting by the roaster and the serving table. We start in daylight and cook into the dark.

  1. Tell us when and where the party is.
  2. We confirm the space and send a price.
  3. We set up in daylight and roast into the evening.
  4. Our chef carves and staff serve.
  5. We pack up, even in the rain.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster

Planning help

Soberton: your questions answered

Is Soberton too small for a hog roast?

No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Is Soberton close to London?

Roughly 59 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Do December dates go quickly?

Very quickly, so ask early. Weekdays frequently have more availability.

How long does the roast need?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, which is why we arrive hours ahead. We work back from your serving time.

Do you need power or water?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

What happens after service?

We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.

Planning for dietary needs

Some guests won’t eat pork, so plan an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Request gluten-free rolls
  • Find out who’d prefer turkey or chicken
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen list

We serve hot rolls on cue, so food goes out straight from the roaster.

Add roast turkey for a traditional Christmas touch.

Organising for someone else?

If you are a venue or event planner, we can fit around your other suppliers.

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Check early, and tell us what they ask for.

A hog roast or other catering?

For a Christmas fair, hot pork rolls are always popular. Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

What you get with us

  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • A clear quote with everything listed

Read our prices page or our hog roast cost guide.

What a hog roast costs

Things that change the price:

  • Numbers
  • Plates or china
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • The date and time of year

Numbers make the biggest difference: the price per head typically falls as numbers rise, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

Getting an accurate quote

To check availability and the cooking area, tell us:

  • Roughly how many people
  • Any venue rules
  • Your menu choices

Catered or do it yourself?

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

You could go for a cold buffet, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience, especially outdoors.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
