Common questions in Christmas Common
Do you cater at venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?
Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We’ll follow the site rules.
Is Christmas Common close to London?
About 39 miles from central London, and well within our area.
Can you cater our wrap?
We do.
Can we just hire the roaster?
Yes, for confident cooks. Ask and we’ll talk you through it.
What happens after service?
We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.
How much room do you need?
Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We will confirm the space with your quote.
Do you bring plates?
We supply plates as standard. You can upgrade to china if you prefer.
What happens in bad weather?
The roaster is under cover, so a shower does not stop us. Your crew will want somewhere dry to eat.
For planners, venues and organisers
For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.
Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it’s worth asking first. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.
Allergies and dietary needs
Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:
- Tell us who doesn’t eat pork
- Stuffing generally contains gluten
- Share the allergen list with the crew
- Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
When lunch is called, we carve fast.
Sides make a proper lunch.
Why choose a hog roast in Christmas Common?
Compared with a full location caterer, a hog roast is simpler and suits smaller shoots and one-off days. When comparing prices, compare the same things: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value.
Why book our hog roast in Christmas Common
- Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
- Planned to your running order
- The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
- Serving and clearing done for you
See our prices page and our hog roast cost guide.
How we price a hog roast for the crew
Each price is built from:
- Site access
- The number of people
- Which meats and sides you choose
- The journey to the venue
The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. There is no one-size price, so we quote each one individually.
What we need to know
To check availability and the cooking area, we’ll need:
- Any venue rules
- The date and time of the event
- Roughly how many people
- Where the event is
Send us the date, the address or OX49 postcode and rough numbers, plus when you’d like to eat. We’ll check the date and send a quote. Fill in our quote form.
The process
On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. In December, daylight in Christmas Common ends around 3:55pm, so a late lunch or wrap at base needs lighting. In summer, light lasts until about 9:25pm.
- You send the location, date and lunch call.
- We check access to base and quote.
- We agree where we set up and when we arrive.
- When lunch is called, we carve and serve quickly.
- We pack up and leave the base tidy.
Preparing for the day
- Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
- Give us a contact number for the day
- Confirm numbers ahead of the day
