Film set catering in Rodmersham, slow-roasted on site

Whatever the production, we fit around the call sheet. We’re frequently asked to cater historic house shoots and crew thank-you days, with new potatoes, a vegan option and spit-roast lamb.

Rural locations near Rodmersham can be a long way from food, so lunch at base matters. The hog is roasted on site at your shoot, slowly, over several hours, and carved only when you are ready to eat.

Looking after everyone

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Tips:

  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten

We get to base first thing, so the roast is ready by lunch.

Wrap parties can run into the evening.

How we price a hog roast for the crew

Your quote depends on:

  • Plates or china
  • The date and time of year
  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • How many people are eating

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so we list each one in the quote. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Details that help

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what’s useful:

  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Where the event is
  • Rough numbers

Planning ahead? Popular dates fill up early, especially summer Saturdays and December Fridays. Tell us your date and we will check it: send us your details through our quote form.

Planners, venues and businesses

Marquee suppliers generally set distances for cooking equipment, so let them know about the roaster. We will keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

For workplace bookings, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We work to the site’s rules.

Step by step

A hog roast is always cooked outside, on a level, open spot under cover, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We agree exactly where before the day. In December, daylight in Rodmersham ends around 3:50pm, so a late lunch or wrap at base needs lighting. In summer, light lasts until about 9:15pm.

  1. Production sends us the location and call times.
  2. We check access to base and quote.
  3. We set up at base and roast through the morning.
  4. We serve when lunch is called.
  5. We pack away straight after.

Preparing for the day

  • Let us know about tight access
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking

Rodmersham: your questions answered

Could you cook in Cromers Wood?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What’s the nearest station to Rodmersham?

The closest is Sittingbourne station, roughly 1.8 miles away.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Can you do gluten-free?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Stuffing generally contains gluten, so check the allergen information.

What about crew who don’t eat pork?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We don’t offer halal meat.

What space does the roaster need?

Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, and a way to wheel everything in. Send us a picture if you’re unsure.

Is crockery included?

Plates come as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

When do you start roasting?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it’s several hours. You will know our arrival time in advance.
