Slow-roasted pork in Benson

Hog roast for events in Benson, carved to order

Who books hog roast for events in Benson?

It suits all ages.

Lots of different events suit a hog roast. Here are some of the most popular:

  • Vintage rallies
  • Charity days
  • Town and village days
  • Small festivals

Events in parks such as Howbery Park need permission from the council or landowner for cooking and vehicles.

Before booking anyone

  • A clear list of what’s included
  • The full menu and the sides
  • How dietary needs are handled
  • Where the roaster goes and what it needs

Our full booking checklist

Allergies and dietary needs

Not everyone eats pork, so it’s worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Tell us what the event asks of traders
  • Let us know if many visitors are vegetarian
  • Remember stuffing typically contains gluten
  • Halal is not offered

If the ground is soft, we’ll need a firm route on and off, especially after rain.

The vegan option is popular at festivals.

Questions from Benson

What’s the nearest station to Benson?

Cholsey station, about 4.2 miles south-west of the centre.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Do you cover Benson?

Yes, Benson is in our area. Send us the address and we will check the date.

What about coeliacs?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

Do you leave the area tidy?

Our staff clear up after service, and leave the area tidy.

What do you need from the organiser?

The roaster runs on gas, so no mains power is needed to cook. Power helps for lighting.

What if it rains?

We roast under cover, so the food isn’t affected. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

What should we sort out beforehand?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Next to a burger van, a hog roast feels more special at a traditional fête. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

What you get with us

  • Carved to order by a chef

About the food

Roast pork

Slow-roasted pork is the heart of the menu: carved in front of you, a mix of shoulder and leg, and served hot.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: crisp, golden and full of flavour, straight off the hog.

For planners, venues and organisers

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Venues often have rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

Should I cook it myself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

Full catering or machine hire? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

The process

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. Summer events in Benson have daylight until about 9:25pm at midsummer and about 7:10pm by late September, which helps evening trading. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, the pitch needs lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. We check access to the pitch and send a price.
  3. We set up early so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.
  4. We serve to order through the event.
  5. We pack down, take our waste and leave the pitch clean.

Getting ready for the day

  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Send final numbers in good time

How to get a price

What affects the price in Benson

Each price is built from:

  • The journey to the venue
  • Access to the cooking area
  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • How long the roast and service take

Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.
