Hog roast for events for Chevening

Hog roast for events near Chevening

Every event handles food differently: a catered package paid by the organiser, or a stall selling to visitors. Let us know what you have in mind. We are often asked to cater horse and dog shows and fundraising events, serving apple sauce, halloumi skewers and a vegan burger or sausage.

For a village fête or field event near Chevening, a hog roast brings hot food to a rural site. Ground and access matter, so tell us about them. The hog is roasted on site at your event, slowly, over several hours.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some visitors won’t eat pork, so it’s worth adding an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Tell us if there is a vegetarian or vegan focus
  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Show allergens at the stall

Name an organiser to meet us.

Add coleslaw.

Working with your venue

If you are organising for someone else, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, let us know who we will deal with on the day. We will keep you both updated.

If the event is on someone else’s land, you’ll need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

A plant-based burger or sausage covers vegans, in a roll, with salad on the side.

Stuffing and apple sauce

Sharp, sweet apple sauce and savoury sage and onion stuffing are the traditional pairing. Note that stuffing generally contains gluten.

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Access for our vehicle to the pitch
  • Space away from marquees, stalls and trees
  • Space for people to queue

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before you book.

How it works

We cook on a gas-fired roaster, so cooking does not depend on mains power; a nearby socket helps with lights if service runs into the evening. In late May, sunset in Chevening is about 8:50pm, and midsummer ones until about 9:20pm. Evening festivals need lighting by the stall after that.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. We set up early so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.
  4. We carve rolls to order as the queue moves.
  5. Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Give us a contact number for the day
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

Chevening: your questions answered

Which station is closest to Chevening?

Dunton Green station, about 1.7 miles east of the centre.

Is Chevening close to London?

Roughly 17 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Can you sell directly to visitors?

Both models are possible. We’ll work it out together.

What happens in bad weather?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower doesn’t stop us. Your visitors will want somewhere dry to eat.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Stuffing generally contains gluten, so check the allergen information.

When do you start roasting?

A whole hog roasts for several hours, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

Can you cater in Chevening?

Yes, Chevening is in our area. Tell us the venue or postcode and we’ll check the date.

Do we need to provide electricity?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to a burger van, a hog roast feels more special. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. Extras, china and longer service add to it.
