Old Warren questions

Which station is closest to Old Warren?

Aldermaston station, about 2.1 miles north-west of the centre.

Can you do a hog roast in Padworth Common Local Nature Reserve?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, usually the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Do we need to provide electricity?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Tell us what’s available and we’ll plan around it.

Is there a non-pork option?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We do not offer halal meat.

What do you need from us on the day?

Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

How much does a hog roast cost?

Every booking is quoted individually, based on numbers, menu, service time and distance. Tell us about your event for a quote.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

Do you do charity events?

Tell us about the event and how you’d like to raise money, and we will suggest options.

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Show allergens at the stall
  • Make the stall easy to find
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if you expect coeliac visitors
  • Tell us what the event asks of traders

We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting, so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.

Tell us about any theme, such as a vintage fête.

What the cooking area needs

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Space away from marquees, stalls and trees
  • Your trader requirements
  • A firm way on and off the field

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

Planners, venues and businesses

Planning on behalf of a committee? One clear contact makes everything easier, particularly when timings shift.

If you are organising for someone else, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We’ll keep everyone in the loop.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

How it works

On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. Late-May events in Old Warren have light until about 8:55pm, while at midsummer it’s about 9:25pm. Evening festivals need lighting by the stall after that.

  1. Share the date, site and expected crowds.
  2. We agree how food will be paid for.
  3. We roast on the pitch.
  4. We serve rolls quickly.
  5. We clear up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster

Planning help

A hog roast or other catering?

One hog roast and a couple of other stalls makes a good food line-up. The main driver is numbers: bigger groups typically cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.
