Slow-roasted pork in Puttenham

Hog roast for events in Puttenham, slow-roasted on site

Sports clubs, fun runs and tournaments suit a hog roast, served as people finish. On the menu are a vegan burger or sausage, apple sauce and crackling, and we’re regularly asked to cater church and village fêtes and charity fundraisers.

At a fête or show near Puttenham, we can cook in a field. Tell us about the ground and the way in. Our chef carves in front of your visitors, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Looking after everyone

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Signpost the stall clearly
  • Balance the food line-up
  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Tell us what the event asks of traders

We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting, so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

The process

When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. Late-September events in Puttenham lose the light at about 7:05pm, so evening trading needs lights.

  1. Tell us about the event.
  2. We confirm the pitch and send a price.
  3. The roast starts before the gates open.
  4. We serve as visitors arrive.
  5. We pack down and take our waste.

How to prepare

  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Check there’s a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Name a contact for the day

Where the roaster can go in Puttenham

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Ideally:

  • Flat, firm ground for the roaster

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

From the roaster

Should I cook it myself?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

The menu, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: squeaky, salty cheese with colourful veg, in a roll or on a plate.

Rotisserie chicken

Rotisserie chicken is a simple, popular alternative to pork, turned until the skin is golden.

Puttenham events: pitches and permissions

Puttenham is about 4 miles south-east of Aldershot, in Surrey. We’re happy to travel to Puttenham for events. Puttenham is one of 395 towns and villages in Surrey where we cater.

School fairs, for a school like Puttenham CofE Infant School, are a natural fit for a hog roast. If visitors are coming by train, the closest railway station is Wanborough station, roughly 1.6 miles north of the centre. Events in and around the Surrey Hills National Landscape, within about 8 miles of Puttenham, frequently have rules about cooking, vehicles and waste; we work to the site rules.

For events in GU3, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and roughly how many visitors. That could mean an event in a garden on The Street, Dark Lane and Hops End, as long as there is somewhere outside to cook. Neighbouring places where we cater events include Wanborough (1 mile north-east), Christmas Pie (1 mile north), Flexford (1 mile north), Shackleford (2 miles south) and Compton (2 miles east). Further out, we also cater in Guildford (5 miles east), Woking (8 miles north-east), Camberley (8 miles north), Farnham (5 miles west), Egham (15 miles north) and Dorking (15 miles east).

A little further out are Ash Museum (2.6 miles north-west) and Seale and Tongham (2.2 miles west). Open spaces near Puttenham include Lower Lake and Hog's Back.

  • Local schools include Prior's Field School (1.3 miles south-east)

What a hog roast costs

The price comes down to:

  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • The number of people
  • Crockery choices
  • Season and day of the week

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

What we need to know

When you contact us, please mention:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Roughly how many people
  • Dietary requirements
  • The address or postcode

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat. We will check the date and send a quote. Fill in our quote form.
