Hog roast hire in Ashurst

Planning a hog roast in Ashurst

Ashurst is about 2 miles south of Totton, in Hampshire. Our roaster is a regular sight at events around Ashurst. Ashurst is one of 683 towns and villages in Hampshire where we cater. You can also see our page for Southampton, about 6 miles away.

PTAs at schools such as Foxhills Infant School often look for a hot-food stall for fairs and sports days. For a christening or gathering after a service at a church such as Colbury Christ Church, the roaster can be set up at a hall or home nearby. The New Forest National Park is within about 4 miles of Ashurst. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access. Ashurst is within about 6 miles of the sea, and sea breezes can be strong. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

Wherever your event is in SO40, we can roast on site for your guests. From Ash Grove, Cecil Avenue and Dene Road or a nearby road, we can set up and roast there. Close by, we cover events in Colbury (1 mile east), Lyndhurst (3 miles south-west), Emery Down (4 miles south-west), Balmerlawn (5 miles south) and Brockenhurst (6 miles south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Winchester (14 miles north-east), Eastleigh (9 miles north-east), Fareham (14 miles east), Chandler's Ford (8 miles north-east), Hedge End (9 miles east) and Lymington (10 miles south).

A little further out are Ashurst Hospital (0.6 miles south-west) and National Dairy Museum (0.5 miles south-east). Within reach you’ll find Testwood Lakes.

  • Local schools include Hounsdown School (1.2 miles north-east)
  • Nearby, you’ll find The Forest Inn (within half a mile south-east)

How our hog roast hire works in Ashurst

Hiring a hog roast means a whole hog cooked slowly on site, for hours, under a gazebo outside. Then our chef carves it and the team serves it in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and a piece of crackling. We serve coleslaw, hog roast rolls and halloumi skewers, and typical bookings are for gatherings after a funeral and village fêtes and school fairs.

Somewhere like Ashurst, a yard or firm field frequently works. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. You will know what’s included before you book: serving times, the menu, staff and anything else agreed, with no surprises on the day.

Prices and what affects them

Things that change the price:

  • Plates or china
  • The date and time of year
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Access to the cooking area

Distance is part of the price: we include travel in the quote. Give us the address so the quote is accurate.

What we need to know

Here’s what we will ask:

  • Where the event is
  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo

Numbers not final yet? Give us your best estimate and we’ll quote on that, and you can confirm nearer the time. Use our quote form.

Ashurst: your questions answered

Is Ashurst too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Do you cater at venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Do you come to Ashurst?

We do. Send us the address and we’ll confirm availability.

Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?

We offer full catering and DIY machine hire. Your quote will set out what’s included.

How do we prepare?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Is there a non-pork option?

We can add lamb or chicken, plus halloumi skewers for vegetarians and a vegan burger or sausage. We don’t provide halal meat.

Do you travel across Hampshire?

All of Hampshire is in our area. Tell us the venue for a quote.

How do you work out quantities?

The roast is chosen to suit how many you are feeding, so a good estimate matters. We’ll confirm the menu in the quote.

A closer look at the menu

Roast pork

Slow-roasted pork is the heart of the menu: carved in front of you, a mix of shoulder and leg, straight from the roaster.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Tell us how many vegans to expect, and we will bring enough vegan burgers or sausages.

Why choose a hog roast in Ashurst?

Compared with a cold buffet, hot roast pork carved in front of you is a different experience. Buffets can sit out for hours. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Why Ashurst hosts choose us

  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • All the equipment comes with us

Diets, allergies and alternatives

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly

Name someone to meet us, who can show us the cooking spot and pass on any changes.

We can supply china instead of standard plates, quoted separately.

Should I cook it myself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

The process

We take care of everything from the first hour of roasting to clearing away, so you can enjoy your event in Ashurst. Evenings in Ashurst stay light until about 9:25pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:10pm; after dark, the serving area and the path to it need good lighting.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. We roast slowly on site, then carve for your guests.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

How to prepare

  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster

Planning help

Working with your venue

Venues often have rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

Planning the cooking spot

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Look for:

  • A safe distance from walls, tents and trees
  • Parking near the spot
  • Permission from the venue or landowner

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
