How our hog roast hire works in Capstone

In Capstone, we cater birthdays, weddings, staff days and fêtes. Whatever the occasion, the format is the same: slow roasting at your venue, then carving and serving. We are frequently asked to cater weddings and receptions and garden parties and barbecues, serving hog roast rolls, spit-roast lamb and coleslaw.

For a rural spot like Capstone, a hog roast feels right at home. Tell us about gates, tracks and the ground. The carving happens right in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a cold buffet, hot roast pork carved in front of you is a different experience. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Why Capstone hosts choose us

  • Served at the time you choose
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow

Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests won’t eat pork, so plan an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Find out who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

Slow roasting needs attention, which is our job, not yours. You can get on with your event.

We also hire out the roaster for DIY hog roasts.

Questions from Capstone

Do you come out to small places like Capstone?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Can you do a hog roast in Darland Banks?

Only if the landowner, generally the council, allows it. Ask them first.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Can we choose catered or DIY?

You can have us cook, or hire the machine. Your quote will set out what’s included.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We clear the serving area and pack away, and leave the area tidy.

Do you serve the crackling?

It is: the skin turns to crackling and everyone gets some.

Can you do gluten-free?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we will bring them. We will give you full allergen information for every dish.

Is mains power needed?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

Step by step

Serving is straightforward: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. In Capstone, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so summer evening service is generally in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:50pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. We check the date and the cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. We serve, tidy up and leave the spot clean.

How to prepare

  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps

The menu, dish by dish

Roast pork

We carve as we serve, so it stays hot and juicy right to the last roll.

Crackling

Crackling takes hours to get right, and a whole hog roasted slowly gets it just right.

Prices and what affects them

We work out each quote from:

  • Numbers
  • Time on site
  • Crockery choices
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken

Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Getting an accurate quote

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Please include:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Dietary requirements
  • A photo of the cooking area

Our roaster has been booked for all sorts of events around Capstone, including:

  • Christmas fairs
  • Milestone birthdays
  • Wakes and memorial gatherings

A green space like Darland Banks is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, generally the council’s.
