Slow-roasted pork in Keycol

Keycol: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

We are gathering after a service at Church of St Bartholomew: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Will there be enough to go round?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we’ll confirm everything in writing.

Do we need a big space?

Frequently, yes, if there is a level, open spot away from the house and trees, and a way to wheel the equipment through. A picture helps us check.

Can you roast in the rain?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

We can supply gluten-free rolls on request. You’ll get allergen details for everything.

What’s included?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Do you cover Keycol?

Yes. We cater across London and the South East, including Keycol and Kent. Send us the address for a quote.

Hog roast hire in Keycol, carved to order

In Keycol, a hog roast is an easy way to feed a lot of people: a single slow roast, carved to order. Everything comes with us, and we serve and tidy up afterwards. We’re often asked to cater christmas fairs and wakes and memorial gatherings, serving salads, coleslaw and crackling.

In a hamlet or village like Keycol, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. Let us know about allergies and dietary needs in advance, and we’ll give you the allergen information for every dish before you book.

Organising for someone else?

For venues and planners, we are happy to work alongside your team.

Marquee hire companies frequently have rules about cooking near their tents, so tell them a hog roast is coming. We will keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

Looking after everyone

Tell us about dietary needs early and we’ll help. Tips:

  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations

The roaster needs looking after for hours, which is our job, not yours. You can relax and enjoy the day.

We also hire out the roaster for DIY hog roasts.

A hog roast compared with other options

A hog roast has one downside: it’s pork. That is why we offer lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers and a vegan option for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Why book with us

  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • An itemised quote
  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit

Step by step

Slow roasting is the whole point: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. Late September evenings in Keycol lose the light at about 7:00pm, and at Christmas it comes at about 3:50pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We get the roaster going hours before you eat.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages

Planning help

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

Catered or do it yourself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

A closer look at the menu

Roast pork

The hog roasts slowly for hours, so the meat is tender and juicy, and it’s carved fresh as people come up.

Stuffing and apple sauce

Stuffing and a dollop of apple sauce turn a pork roll into a hog roast roll, just as they should.
