A hog roast near Northwood

Northwood: venues, access and local tips

Northwood is about 1 mile south of Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Northwood and the surrounding area are covered for events. We cover all 125 towns and villages in the Isle of Wight. Our bookings stretch from Northwood to Southampton (about 13 miles away).

Churches such as All Saints' Church rarely have room for a roaster, but a hall or home close by normally does. If you’re organising a summer fair for a school like Northwood Primary School, a hog roast is a crowd-pleaser. The coast is within about 2 miles of Northwood, and sea breezes can be strong. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

For events in PO31, we just need to know where the roaster can cook. Local streets include Nodes Road, Wyatts Lane and Uplands Road; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Nearby, we also cater events in Rew Street (1 mile west), Gurnard (1 mile north), Cowes (1 mile north), Noke Common (2 miles south) and Parkhurst (2 miles south). Further out, we also cater in Newport (3 miles south), Ryde (7 miles east), Sandown (9 miles south-east), Shanklin (10 miles south-east), Ventnor (11 miles south-east) and Oakfield (7 miles east). For an event at a remote spot, tell us early so we can plan the journey.

Well-known places in the area include Isle of Wight Natural History Centre (0.5 miles north) and West Cowes Castle (1.7 miles north). Open spaces near Northwood include Mill Hill and Briddlesford Nature Reserve.

  • Nearby schools include Cowes Enterprise College (1.4 miles north)
  • Pubs nearby include The Travellers Joy pub (under half a mile south-west)

Hog roast hire in Northwood, carved to order

The format is simple and it works for almost any crowd: pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling in a roll, and alternatives for anyone who does not eat pork. For garden parties and barbecues and weddings and receptions, we’ll put together a menu of spit-roast lamb, coleslaw and new potatoes for your guests.

In a small place like Northwood, a hog roast often goes in a field, a farmyard or a big garden. Tell us about narrow lanes or long drives, and firm, level ground matters most. Plates come as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

Your questions about a hog roast in Northwood

We’re gathering after a service at All Saints' Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Is Northwood too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

What happens when we hire a hog roast?

We handle the roasting, carving and serving. Just give us an outdoor spot to cook.

How far ahead should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: use our quote form.

When do you start roasting?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it’s several hours. We’ll confirm our arrival time when we quote.

What’s the price?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Send us the details and we’ll quote.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We do not offer halal meat.

Do we need a big space?

Many gardens are big enough, and a way to wheel the equipment through. Send us a picture.

The process

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We agree exactly where before the day. Light matters for a long roast: in Northwood, sunset is around 8:55pm in late May and 9:20pm in late June, but by late December it is dark by about 4:00pm, so winter bookings need lighting from mid-afternoon.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. We check the date and the cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

How to prepare

  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Let us know about tight access

About the food

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Vegetarians get halloumi and vegetable skewers, a hot, filling option of their own.

Rotisserie chicken

For guests who don’t eat pork, rotisserie chicken is the easy answer, and children typically like it too.

Looking after everyone

Most people love a hog roast, but it’s pork. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Ask about allergies when you send invitations

We’ll agree a contact for the day, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

Sides turn a roll into a proper meal, and they’re listed in your quote.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a cold buffet, a hog roast is hot, freshly carved and feels like an occasion. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

Why book our hog roast in Northwood

  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too

Read how we price and what a hog roast costs.

Catered or do it yourself?

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is usually easier.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

How we price a hog roast

Your quote depends on:

  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Whether you want china
  • How long the roast and service take

Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value.

What to tell us

To check the date and the space, tell us:

  • Roughly how many people
  • Any venue rules
  • What the outdoor space is like
  • Allergies we should know about

We need a few details to quote: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Fill in our quote form.

Working with your venue

If you are booking for a workplace, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We will fit in with site rules.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it’s worth asking first. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
