Hog roast hire for your event in Puckaster

Hiring a hog roast means a whole hog cooked slowly on site, for hours, under a gazebo outside. Then our chef carves it and the team serves it in rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Popular choices include rotisserie chicken, crackling and coleslaw, and typical bookings are for wedding breakfasts and evening food and christmas parties.

For a rural spot like Puckaster, a hog roast feels right at home. Let us know about access and ground conditions. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Is a hog roast right for your event?

Compared with a barbecue, a hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone, so nobody stands at a grill all afternoon. See our guide to hog roast or barbecue. Distance is part of the price: travel is included in your quote, with any London charges listed. Give us the address for an accurate figure.

Planning a hog roast in Puckaster

Puckaster is about 6 miles south-west of Shanklin, in the Isle of Wight. Wherever your event is in Puckaster, we can bring the roaster, given a suitable outdoor cooking area. We cover all 125 towns and villages in the Isle of Wight. We cater events right across the region, from Puckaster to Southampton (about 24 miles away).

If you’re organising a summer fair for a school like Niton Primary School, a hog roast is a crowd-pleaser. Puckaster is within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal sites can be windy. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

We bring hog roasts to events all over PO38 and the streets around it. Local streets include Puckaster Lane and Undercliff Drive; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Close by, we cover events in Niton (1 mile north), Blackgang (1 mile north-west), Bierley (1 mile north), Whitwell (2 miles north-east) and Nettlecombe (2 miles north-east). We also serve nearby towns such as Newport (8 miles north), Ryde (11 miles north-east), Cowes (12 miles north), Sandown (7 miles north-east), Shanklin (6 miles north-east) and Ventnor (3 miles east). Remote sites take a little more planning, so ask early about your event.

Other landmarks nearby include Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children (5.9 miles north-east) and Blackgang Sawmill Museum (1.5 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Stenbury Down.

  • Local pubs include The Buddle Inn (within half a mile west)

How we price a hog roast

There’s no fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • Travel to Puckaster
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Crockery choices
  • Time on site

When comparing prices, compare the same things: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

What we need to know

These are the details we need:

  • A photo of the cooking area
  • Your menu choices
  • Rough numbers
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

Numbers not final yet? Give us your best estimate and we will quote on that, then confirm closer to the date. Send us your details through our quote form.

Puckaster: your questions answered

Is Puckaster too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Can you roast near the sea around Puckaster?

Yes, of course. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

No, the roast is always cooked outdoors under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. We can often serve indoors if the venue agrees.

What’s the price?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we’re on site. Tell us your date and we’ll send a price.

How far ahead should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

Can you do gluten-free?

We can supply gluten-free rolls on request. You’ll get allergen details for everything.

Do you provide china?

We supply plates as standard. China is available at an extra cost.

Do we need a big space?

Access and clearance matter more than size. Describe the space and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the cooking area needs

The cooking area is the main thing to plan. Check these:

  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • Flat outdoor ground for the roaster and a gazebo

Puckaster is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey.

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly before booking.

The menu, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Vegetarians get halloumi and vegetable skewers, a hot, filling option of their own.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

A plant-based burger or sausage covers vegans, in a roll, with salad on the side.

Organising for someone else?

If you’re booking for a workplace, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We work to the site’s rules.

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Count anyone who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them

We’ll be with you for a good part of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

A second roast, lamb or chicken, gives people a choice.

How the day works

We roast under cover, so a shower won’t spoil the food. Your guests will still want somewhere dry to eat, such as a marquee, hall or barn. In Puckaster, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so summer evening service is usually in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 4:00pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. It starts with your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. We clear the serving area and pack away.

Getting ready for the day

  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day
