How our party hog roast works in Coldblow

Birthdays, christenings and summer parties in Coldblow suit a hog roast: hearty food that feeds everyone at once. We serve and tidy up. We serve hog roast rolls, rotisserie chicken and a vegan burger or sausage, and we’re frequently booked for engagement parties and big birthday parties.

Most parties in Coldblow are at home, and in London that means getting the roaster into the garden. With no side passage, a rear gate or front garden may work. Send us a picture. The hog is roasted on site at your party, slowly, over several hours, then carved fresh for your guests.

Catered or do it yourself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

Looking after everyone

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who doesn’t eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled
  • Halal is not offered, so arrange it separately if needed

Make sure the gate or side passage is open when we arrive, so we can wheel the equipment in.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Things to check:

  • Parking close to the house
  • A gazebo, marquee or room indoors for guests if it rains
  • A word with the neighbours

As a London location, Coldblow is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access takes planning: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

The menu, dish by dish

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Our vegan option is a vegan burger or sausage, in a roll, with salad on the side.

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it’s needed, so it stays hot and juicy right to the last roll.

What happens on the day

Carving is part of the show: the hog is carved in front of your guests, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. Sunset in Coldblow is about 8:50pm in late May and 9:20pm in late June, so an early-evening carve is generally in daylight. After about 3:50pm in December, we need light to carve.

  1. You tell us the date, your address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. You get a check on the date and the cooking spot, and a quote.
  3. We set up early and get the hog roasting.
  4. We carve and serve at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we tidy up the serving area.

Before we arrive

Coldblow questions

Do you cater at venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

Can you do a hog roast in Braeburn Park?

Only if the landowner, typically the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Can we hire the hog roast machine for our party?

You can hire the machine. We’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works.

What should we sort out beforehand?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

How much room do you need?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. A photo helps.

When do you start roasting?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it’s several hours. You will know our arrival time in advance.

Is clearing up included?

Plates come as standard and our staff clear the serving area.

How big a hog will we need?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will confirm everything in writing.

Planners, venues and businesses

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Tell us what you need and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it is worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

Prices and what affects them

Things that change the price:

  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Time on site
  • Site access

Travel matters for the price: we include travel in the quote, with any London charges listed. Give us the address for an accurate figure.
