Slow-roasted pork in Farley Green

DIY versus a catered hog roast

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Party hog roast in Farley Green, slow-roasted on site

Hosting a party means juggling everything at once. A hog roast takes the food off your list: we roast, carve, serve and clear. Popular choices include apple sauce, hog roast rolls and rotisserie chicken, and we’re regularly asked to cater leaving and retirement do’s and getting-engaged parties.

Country parties near Farley Green suit a hog roast: roasted all afternoon and carved on the lawn. Plan shelter in case it rains. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so it’s worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Check the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Plan separately for anyone who needs halal food
  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Collect dietary needs when guests reply

On the day, we arrive hours before the party starts, so the smell is the first thing guests notice.

Add chicken for younger or fussier guests.

Organising for someone else?

If the event is on someone else’s land, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

If you’re organising for someone else, whether you are a planner, a PA or on a committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We will keep you both updated.

The process

We get there well ahead of service, because a whole hog takes hours to roast. The smell usually brings people over long before we carve. Evening parties in Farley Green need a little planning: daylight lasts until about 9:20pm at midsummer, but by late September it is around 7:05pm. Lights by the food keep the party going.

  1. Tell us about your party: date, address and numbers.
  2. We check the garden or drive and quote.
  3. We set up hours ahead.
  4. At food time, the chef carves and we serve.
  5. We clear the serving area and go.

Preparing for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
