FAQs for Hare Hatch

Which station is closest to Hare Hatch?

Wargrave station, about 1.4 miles west of the centre.

Can you do a hog roast in Loddon Nature Reserve?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Will the smell bother the neighbours?

It’s worth warning them: roasting takes hours. They may want a roll.

Do we need our own staff?

We carve and serve for you, then clear the serving area afterwards.

Do we need to wash up?

Plates come as standard and our staff clear the serving area.

Do you come to Hare Hatch?

Yes, Hare Hatch is in our area. Tell us the venue or postcode and we’ll confirm availability.

Can you roast in the rain?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower doesn’t stop us. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. Send us a picture if you’re unsure.

Planning a party in Hare Hatch

Hare Hatch is about 4 miles north-east of Woodley, in Wokingham. We bring a hog roast for your party to parties anywhere in Hare Hatch, given a suitable outdoor cooking area. Hare Hatch is one of 35 towns and villages in Wokingham we cover. Our bookings stretch from Hare Hatch to Reading (about 7 miles away).

A green space like Loddon Nature Reserve is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, generally the council’s. Nearby historic houses include Harleyford Manor (4.3 miles north). Grand settings like these frequently have strict rules on caterers, so for most parties a garden or hired hall is simpler.

We cater parties across the RG10 postcode area and the streets around it. That could mean a party in a garden on Bath Road, Tag Lane and Milley Lane or the roads around them, as long as there is somewhere outside to cook. If your venue is just outside Hare Hatch, we also cover The Holt (1 mile north-east), Kiln Green (1 mile north-east), Ruscombe (1 mile south-west), Twyford (1 mile south-west) and Waltham St Lawrence (2 miles east). Further out, we also cater in Reading (7 miles south-west), Wokingham (6 miles south), Woodley (4 miles south-west), Earley (6 miles south-west), Crowthorne (9 miles south) and Lower Earley (6 miles south-west).

Nearby you will also find St Mark's Hospital (4.7 miles north-east) and Frazer Nash Archives (3.3 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Weycock Hill and Hurley Chalk Pit.

  • Local schools include Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School (1.3 miles west) and The Piggott School (1.3 miles west)
  • Pubs nearby include The Queen Victoria pub (less than half a mile north-east)

Allergies and dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Ask us to label vegetarian and vegan food
  • Halal isn’t offered, so arrange it separately if needed
  • Request gluten-free rolls
  • Add a dietary question to the invite

Clear the route to the garden before we arrive, so we can wheel the equipment in.

Rotisserie chicken is popular at family parties.

What the cooking area needs

It’s worth planning the cooking area in advance. The ideal spot has:

  • A side gate or passage wide enough to wheel the equipment
  • A spot well away from the house
  • Flat ground in the garden or on the drive

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Prices and what affects them

Your quote depends on:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Site access
  • Plates or china

Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. Keeping it simple keeps it affordable.

What we need to know

To check the date and the space, tell us:

  • Your menu choices
  • Any venue rules
  • The date and time of the event
  • Allergies we should know about

To get a quote, just send us your date, venue and numbers. A picture of the cooking area helps. Send us your details through our quote form.

Catered or do it yourself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

What happens on the day

We get there well ahead of service, since slow roasting cannot be rushed. Your guests will smell it long before they see it. Sunset in Hare Hatch is about 8:55pm in late May and 9:25pm in late June, so most summer parties eat in daylight. Winter parties, dark by about 3:55pm, need lights by the roaster.

  1. Start with the date, the address and roughly how many.
  2. We check the space and send a price.
  3. We arrive early and get the roast going.
  4. We carve and serve at food time.
  5. We tidy up and pack away.

Preparing for the day

  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot

For event organisers in Hare Hatch

If you’re a venue or event planner, we’re happy to work alongside your team, sharing timings and a site plan.

Marquee hire companies frequently have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. We’ll keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
