DIY versus a catered hog roast

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is generally easier.

Planners, venues and businesses

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before booking. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

What happens on the day

Slow roasting is the whole point: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Autumn parties in Langney get dark early: about 7:00pm by late September and 3:55pm by December. Light the garden path and the serving area.

  1. Show us the garden or drive.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. On the day, we roast slowly under cover.
  4. We serve when you are ready.
  5. We clear up so you don’t have to.

Getting ready for the day

  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Think about shelter for your guests
  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees

Langney: your questions answered

Can you roast near the sea around Langney?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

How far is Langney from London?

Roughly 51 miles from the centre of London.

How much will it be?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Send us the details and we will quote.

Should we warn the neighbours?

Give them a heads-up, especially if the roaster is near a fence.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is normally fine if the venue is happy.

Is mains power needed?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Let us know what’s on site.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, for confident cooks. Ask and we will talk you through it.

What should we sort out beforehand?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We bring everything else.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Salads, new potatoes, coleslaw and roast or jacket potatoes turn rolls into a full meal.

Roast pork

Hours of slow roasting make the pork soft and full of flavour, and it’s carved fresh as people come up.

A hog roast compared with other options

Hire the machine or book catering? DIY suits confident cooks and relaxed parties; catering suits bigger parties. The main driver is numbers: the price per head normally falls as numbers rise, since much of the cost is fixed.

Why book with us

  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Choices for people who do not eat pork
  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • A choice of salads and potatoes

Party venues around Langney

Langney is about 2 miles north-east of Eastbourne, in East Sussex. Planning a hog roast for your party in Langney? We cover the whole area. We cover 289 places in East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. Our bookings stretch from Langney to Brighton (20 miles away).

For guests coming by train, the closest railway station is Pevensey & Westham station, roughly 1.1 miles north-east of the centre. If you had Princes Park in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we can’t simply set up a roaster in a public park. Langney is within about 7 miles of the South Downs National Park, so many gardens around here have a great outlook. The coast is within about 3 miles, so breezy days are common, so we plan a sheltered spot.

Anywhere in BN23, we can roast on site for your guests, from busy streets to quiet lanes. Allergies and dietary needs

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Some ideas:

  • Ask about allergies on the invitation
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled
  • Find out who doesn’t eat pork so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans

Ensure the gate or side passage is open when we arrive, so we can bring everything through.

Add chicken for younger or fussier guests.

Choosing a hog roast caterer

How we price a hog roast for your party

We do not use a fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:

  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Distance from us
  • Crockery choices

Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.
