Our hog roast hire in East Sussex

A hog roast is one of the simplest ways to feed a crowd in East Sussex: one roast, slow-cooked for hours, carved in front of everyone. We bring the roaster, the cover and the serving kit, and we serve and tidy up afterwards. Popular choices include new potatoes, halloumi skewers and spit-roast lamb, and we are often booked for festive gatherings and corporate events.

A hog roast is always cooked outside, on a level, open spot under cover, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We agree exactly where before the day.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. We roast slowly on site, then carve for your guests.
  5. We serve, tidy up and leave the spot clean.

Pricing in East Sussex

Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so we list each one in the quote. Keeping it simple keeps it affordable.

Landmarks near Eastbourne

In Eastbourne, that can mean an event near St Andrew, Princes Park and Stafford Junior School and the streets around them. Also close by are The King's Arms Public House (0.9 miles south-east), WMG Academy for Young Engineers (1.5 miles south-west) and Ratton School (1.1 miles west). Eastbourne’s nearest station is Hampden Park station, about 0.7 miles north-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Pevensey Castle (3 miles north-east) and Royal Sussex Regimental Museum (1 mile south-east). Green spaces nearby include Combe Hill.

Planning a hog roast in East Sussex

East Sussex covers everything from Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea to 240 small villages and hamlets, and a hog roast suits every kind of setting. In towns, plan access to the garden; in villages, tell us about lanes and ground. Parts of East Sussex are within a few miles of the High Weald National Landscape and the South Downs National Park, so check venue rules on outside caterers for countryside events. Around 106 places in East Sussex are close to the coast, where we always think about wind when choosing a cooking spot.

Eastbourne: A green space like Princes Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s. Coming by train? The closest railway station is Hampden Park station, roughly 0.7 miles north-west of the centre. In Eastbourne, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so summer evening service is typically in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

Planning for dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Remember that stuffing typically contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Ask about allergies when you send invitations
  • Count anyone who does not eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

You won’t need to worry about the food on the day. We arrive hours ahead, set up, roast, carve and serve, and our staff clear the serving area afterwards.

Ask for gluten-free rolls for anyone who needs them.

Before you choose a spot

The cooking area is the main thing to plan. Check these:

  • A step-free route to wheel the equipment in
  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • Permission from the venue or landowner

What we serve, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken from the rotisserie gives people a non-pork choice, turned until the skin is golden.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Vegan guests can have a vegan burger or sausage, so everyone has something hot.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Next to a street-food van, a hog roast feeds a crowd quickly from one roast.

Questions to ask before you book

  • When payments are due and what happens if plans change
  • Whether plates or china are included
  • What the cooking area needs: space, cover and access
  • Arrival time and how long the roast needs

Should I cook it myself?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Common questions in East Sussex

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

We do, if you are happy to roast and carve yourself. We’ll explain the details with your quote.

Do we need to provide electricity?

The roaster runs on gas, so we do not need mains power to cook. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

How soon do you get booked up?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. For other dates, a few weeks can be enough. Send your date and we will check.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. Serving inside is often possible, with the venue’s agreement.

What about guests who don’t eat pork?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. Please note we do not offer halal meat.

Will people get crackling?

Yes, the crackling is shared out as we carve.

What happens after service?

We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.
