Hog roast hire in Norton

How we price a hog roast

The price comes down to:

  • Time on site
  • Travel to Norton
  • Crockery choices
  • Season and day of the week

The main driver is numbers: bigger groups typically cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

Getting an accurate quote

These are the details we need:

  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Where the event is
  • Your menu choices

We price every booking individually, based on numbers, menu, timings and distance. Tell us about your event for a quote: use our quote form.

How our hog roast hire works in Norton

There’s nothing quite like the smell of a hog roast drifting across a garden or field. We cook at your venue in Norton, low and slow, then serve it in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. We serve hog roast rolls, halloumi skewers and crackling, and typical bookings are for corporate events and festive gatherings.

In a hamlet or village like Norton, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Catered or do it yourself?

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

A closer look at the menu

Spit-roast lamb

Lamb roasted on the spit is a lovely alternative to pork, especially for guests who do not eat pork.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

A plant-based burger or sausage covers vegans, in a roll, with salad on the side.

A hog roast compared with other options

Compared with a cold buffet, hot roast pork carved in front of you is a different experience. Buffets can sit out for hours. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, which is why each one gets its own quote.

Why us?

  • Carved to order by a chef
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • An itemised quote

What happens on the day

Slow roasting is the whole point: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. Because the roast takes hours, daylight is worth planning: in Norton, sunset is around 8:50pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June, but by late December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so winter bookings need lighting from mid-afternoon.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. On the day, we set up on the agreed spot and start roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

How to prepare

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Give us a contact number for the day

How to get a price

Busy weekends book up early, especially summer Saturdays and December Fridays. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: send us your details through our quote form.

A green space like Castle Hill is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, generally the council’s. Among the historic houses close to Norton are Alfriston Clergy House (3.2 miles east) and Firle Place (3.3 miles north). If your event is at a historic house or estate, check its rules on outside caterers and gas cooking early. Norton is within about 4 miles of the South Downs National Park. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access. The coast is within about 2 miles of Norton, and coastal sites can be windy. We think about wind when choosing the cooking spot and putting up the cover.

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, and order an alternative for them

Everything for serving comes with us, so all you need is the space.

China crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

Norton: your questions answered

Could you cook in Castle Hill?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Which station is closest to Norton?

The closest is Bishopstone (Sussex) station, roughly 1.2 miles away.

What do you need from us on the day?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Do you serve the crackling?

It is: slow roasting crisps the skin and we break it up for everyone.

When do you start roasting?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?

Either: fully catered, where we roast, carve and serve, or DIY machine hire. Catering is the most popular choice.

What happens when we hire a hog roast?

You choose the date, the menu and the serving time; we do the rest. Just give us an outdoor spot to cook.

Who serves?

You don’t need anyone else: our chef carves and our team serves and clears.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Things to check:

  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A sheltered place for people to eat if it rains

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.
