How it works

Carving is part of the show: the hog is carved in front of your guests, with crackling for everyone who wants it. Because the roast takes hours, daylight is worth planning: in Meads, sunset is around 8:45pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June, while in December the light goes at about 3:55pm.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

Preparing for the day

  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
  • Send final numbers in good time

Questions from Meads

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

What’s the nearest station to Meads?

The closest is Eastbourne station, roughly 1.1 miles away.

Do you clear up?

Our staff clear the serving area, so you’re not left with the mess.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

We can provide gluten-free rolls if you ask. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

When should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: use our quote form.

What about guests who don’t eat pork?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We do not offer halal meat.

Can the hog roast be cooked indoors?

Outside, always. Serving indoors is generally fine if the venue is happy.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

The hog is the centrepiece, with lamb and chicken as extras.

Thinking of a hog roast in Gildrege Park? Cooking in a park needs the owner’s permission, generally the council’s, and many parks do not allow it. For a christening or gathering after a service at a church such as St John the Evangelist, the roaster can be set up at a hall or home nearby. The South Downs National Park is within about 6 miles of Meads, and some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles on site. Check your venue’s rules on outside caterers. Meads is within about 2 miles of the sea, and coastal sites can be windy. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

About the food

Rotisserie chicken

Rotisserie chicken is there for anyone who’d rather not have pork, and it suits fussy eaters.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Add salads, coleslaw and potatoes to make it a proper meal, especially at a sit-down event.

Is a hog roast right for your event?

The obvious catch is that a hog roast is pork. That’s why we offer lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers and a vegan option for anyone who does not eat it. Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, which is built into the price.

Why us?

  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • All the equipment comes with us

Allergies and dietary needs

Most people love a hog roast, but it is pork. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled

Slow roasting needs attention, which is our job, not yours. You can relax and enjoy the day.

Add lamb or chicken for a second roast.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
