How our hog roast hire works in Friston

Our hog roast hire is fully catered: roasting, carving and serving are all done for you. If you’d rather do it yourself, we also hire out the machine. We serve rotisserie chicken, spit-roast lamb and crackling, and we are frequently booked for sports clubs and societies and summer garden parties.

In a smaller place like Friston, a hog roast in the garden is often the simplest option: plenty of room, no hire fees and nobody stuck in the kitchen. Tell us about access down the drive or side of the house. Our staff serve and clear, so nobody in your party has to serve or tidying up afterwards.

A hog roast in Friston: local details

Friston is about 4 miles south-west of Eastbourne, in East Sussex. From village halls to gardens and fields, events around Friston suit a hog roast. Friston is one of 289 places in East Sussex where we cater. You can also see our page for Brighton, about 16 miles away.

Historic houses near Friston include Alfriston Clergy House (3.7 miles north-west). If your event is at a historic house or estate, check its rules on outside caterers and gas cooking early. Churches such as The Parish Church of St Simon and St Jude rarely have room for a roaster, but a hall or home close by normally does. Friston is within about 4 miles of the South Downs National Park. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access. The coast is within about 4 miles of Friston, and coastal sites can be windy. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

For events in BN20, we just need to know where the roaster can cook. Your event could be at a house on Dene Side, Dene Close and Michel Close or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere outside to cook. If your venue is just outside Friston, we also cover East Dean (1 mile south-west), Birling Gap (1 mile south), Jevington (2 miles north), Old Town (3 miles east) and Meads (3 miles east). We also serve nearby towns such as Eastbourne (4 miles north-east), Bexhill-on-Sea (13 miles north-east), Seaford (4 miles west), Lewes (12 miles north-west), Hailsham (7 miles north) and Uckfield (15 miles north).

Well-known places in the area include Eastbourne District General Hospital (3 miles north-east) and Filching Manor And Motor Museum (3 miles north). The countryside around Friston includes Combe Hill.

Prices and what affects them

We work out each quote from:

  • The number of people
  • How long the roast and service take
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Plates or china

Midweek and quieter months are often easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Ask us and we’ll suggest the best fit for your budget.

Getting an accurate quote

To check availability and the cooking area, we’ll need:

  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • An estimate of numbers
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

For a quote, send us a few details: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Fill in our quote form.

Friston: your questions answered

Which station is closest to Friston?

The closest is Eastbourne station, roughly 3.2 miles away.

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

What space does the roaster need?

A level, open area outdoors with room for the roaster, a gazebo and a carving table, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We’ll confirm the space with your quote.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we’ll bring them. You will get allergen details for everything.

What happens when we hire a hog roast?

We roast on site, carve to order and serve, in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling.

How far ahead should we book?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

How do we prepare?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We bring everything else.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. We don’t provide halal meat.

About the food

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Some guests will be vegetarian, so halloumi and vegetable skewers make sure they’re not left with just salad.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

A hog roast roll is designed to be eaten in the hand. We can bring gluten-free rolls if you ask.

Catered or do it yourself?

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

How it works

The secret is time: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Around midsummer it stays light in Friston until about 9:15pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Give us a contact number for the day
  • Give us final numbers a week or so before

How to compare hog roast caterers

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a barbecue, a hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone, so nobody stands at a grill all afternoon. Our guide compares the two. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Why us?

  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • Our staff serve and clear
  • All the equipment comes with us

Take a look at our prices page or what a hog roast costs.

Allergies and dietary needs

We give full allergen information for every dish. To make the most of it:

  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

We’ll be with you for a good part of the day, since slow roasting starts early.

We also hire out the roaster for DIY hog roasts.

  • Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
