A hog roast in Cooksbridge: local details

Cooksbridge is about 2 miles north of Lewes, in East Sussex. Cooksbridge and the surrounding area are covered for events. We cater 289 places across East Sussex. We cater events right across the region, from Cooksbridge to Brighton (about 7 miles away).

PTAs at schools such as Hamsey Community Primary School frequently look for a hot-food stall for fairs and sports days. For a christening or gathering after a service at a church such as Church of St Peter, the roaster can be set up at a hall or home nearby. Cooksbridge is within about 3 miles of the South Downs National Park, and some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles on site. Check your venue’s rules on outside caterers.

For events in BN8, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and roughly how many guests. Local streets include Station Mews, Chatfield Close and Chandler's Mead; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Close by, we cover events in Chiltington (1 mile north-west), Barcombe (1 mile north-east), Barcombe Cross (2 miles north-east), Barcombe Mills (2 miles north-east) and Upper Wellingham (2 miles east). Further out, we also cater in Eastbourne (15 miles south-east), Seaford (10 miles south-east), Hailsham (12 miles east), Crowborough (13 miles north-east), Uckfield (7 miles north-east) and Newhaven (8 miles south).

A little further out are St John under the Castle Lewes (1.9 miles south) and Lewes Castle (2.3 miles south). The countryside around Cooksbridge includes Malling Down and Offham Hill.

  • Local pubs include The Rainbow Inn (0.5 miles north)

About our hog roast hire in Cooksbridge

The smell of roasting pork is half the appeal. We roast slowly on site in Cooksbridge, then carve the pork into rolls with all the trimmings. Popular choices include halloumi skewers, salads and spit-roast lamb, and we are frequently booked for weddings, day or evening and wakes and memorial gatherings.

In a hamlet or village like Cooksbridge, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. Your quote spells out what’s included: the date, the serving time, the menu and the plates, with no surprises on the day.

For planners, venues and organisers

For venues and planners, we are happy to work alongside your team, sharing timings and a site plan.

If you’re planning an event on someone’s behalf, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We will keep everyone in the loop.

The process

When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. Light matters for a long roast: in Cooksbridge, sunset is around 8:50pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June, but by late December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so winter bookings need lighting from mid-afternoon.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

How to prepare

  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
