Hog roast hire in Bodiam

How our hog roast hire works in Bodiam

People book a hog roast in Bodiam for everything from birthdays to fêtes. Whatever the occasion, the format is the same: a slow roast on site, carved fresh and served by our team. Typical bookings include wakes and christmas fairs, with coleslaw, spit-roast lamb and crackling.

Somewhere as small as Bodiam, a field, yard or garden is often the spot. Country lanes and long drives are fine if we know about them, and level, firm ground is the key. Our chef carves in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Step by step

A typical booking goes like this: the roaster goes up and the hog goes on, the pork cooks slowly for hours, and our chef carves it when you are ready. Evenings in Bodiam stay light until about 9:15pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:00pm; after dark, the serving area and the path to it need good lighting.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings and where the roaster goes.
  4. We roast slowly on site, then carve for your guests.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we pack away.

Prices and what affects them

We work out each quote from:

  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Plates or china
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Distance from us

What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

Details that help

These are the details we need:

  • Rough numbers
  • Any venue rules
  • The venue or postcode
  • The date and time of the event

When you are weighing up caterers, ask each one exactly what’s included. Ours lists it clearly. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

Bodiam: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the High Weald National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

What’s the nearest station to Bodiam?

Robertsbridge station, about 3.3 miles south-west of the centre.

What if things run late?

We work back from when you want to eat, and we can hold the roast for a while if the day runs behind.

How much will it be?

Every booking is quoted individually, based on numbers, menu, service time and distance. Ask us for a quote.

Can you do gluten-free?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Stuffing usually contains gluten, so check the allergen information.

Do we need to provide electricity?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Tell us what’s available and we will plan around it.

How long does the roast need?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

What meats can we have?

Add lamb or rotisserie chicken alongside the pork. Vegetarian and vegan options are available too.

Working with your venue

If the event is on someone else’s land, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Marquee suppliers typically set distances for cooking equipment, so tell them a hog roast is coming. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Planning for dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing typically contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. Other tips:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations

Expect us to be on site for much of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

We can supply china instead of standard plates, at an extra cost.

Should I cook it myself?

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.
