About our hog roast hire in Westdean

With hog roast hire, the cooking happens at your event, which means it is carved hot, with crisp crackling. Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options can go alongside. Whether it’s gatherings after a funeral and Fêtes, fairs and shows, we’ll put together a menu of coleslaw, crackling and salads for your guests.

Somewhere as small as Westdean, a field, yard or garden is often the spot. Country lanes and long drives are fine if we know about them, and firm, level ground matters most. Timings are planned around your event, working back from when you want to eat.

We bring hog roasts to all 289 towns and villages across East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Brighton, about 13 miles away.

If you had Seaford Head Nature Reserve in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we can’t simply set up a roaster in a public park. Check your venue’s rules on outside caterers. The coast is within about 3 miles of Westdean, and sea breezes can be strong. • Travel to Westdean
  • Numbers
  • Access to the cooking area

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

Should I cook it myself?

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

What happens on the day

The secret is time: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Light matters for a long roast: around Westdean, it stays light until about 9:15pm at midsummer, but by late December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so winter bookings need lighting from mid-afternoon.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We get the roaster going hours before you eat.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We clear up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Let us know about tight access

What we serve, dish by dish

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb is popular alongside the pork, especially for guests who don’t eat pork.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Choose from salads, new potatoes, coleslaw and roast or jacket potatoes, depending on the season and the occasion.

Planning for dietary needs

Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Add a dietary question to your invitations
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

We’ll agree a contact for the day, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

Ask for gluten-free rolls for anyone who needs them.

Common questions in Westdean

Can you roast near the sea around Westdean?

Yes. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

Is Westdean too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, and a way to wheel everything in. Send us a photo if you are unsure.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

Do you serve the food?

Our chef carves and our staff serve, and we clear up when service is finished.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we’ll bring them. We will give you full allergen information for every dish.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will adjust.

  • Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
