Slow-roasted pork in Blackboys
About our hog roast hire in Blackboys
Hog roast hire means a whole pig roasted slowly at your venue, for hours, under a gazebo outside. When it is ready, our chef carves it and our staff serve it in soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Popular choices include crackling, hog roast rolls and spit-roast lamb, and typical bookings are for parties at home and weddings, day or evening.
In a small place like Blackboys, a hog roast frequently goes in a field, a farmyard or a big garden. Tell us about narrow lanes or long drives, and level, firm ground is the key. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

Bringing a hog roast to Blackboys
Blackboys is about 3 miles east of Uckfield, in East Sussex. We bring a hog roast to events anywhere in Blackboys, given a suitable outdoor cooking area. We bring hog roasts to all 289 towns and villages across East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Brighton, about 16 miles away.
For anyone arriving by rail, Buxted station, about 2.3 miles north-west, is the nearest station. If you had Passingworth Park in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we can’t simply set up a roaster in a public park. The High Weald National Landscape is within about 6 miles of Blackboys, and some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles on site. Ask your venue about gas cooking and access.
Here we cover the TN22 postcode area, and we can cater your event anywhere in it. From High Street, Mount Pleasant and Gun Road or anywhere nearby, we’ll bring the roaster to you. Being close to the B2102, Blackboys is simple for us to get to for your event. If your venue is just outside Blackboys, we also cover Etchingwood (1 mile north-west), Framfield (1 mile west), Potter's Green (2 miles north-west), Buxted (2 miles north-west) and Hadlow Down (2 miles north). Larger places within reach include Eastbourne (13 miles south-east), Bexhill-on-Sea (15 miles south-east), Seaford (13 miles south), Lewes (9 miles south-west), Hailsham (8 miles south-east) and Crowborough (6 miles north).
A little further out are Uckfield Community Hospital (2.6 miles west) and Sussex Farm Museum (3.9 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Selwyns Wood.
- Nearby, you’ll find Blackboys Inn (under half a mile south)
Planning for dietary needs
Tell us about dietary needs early and we’ll help. Tips:
- Put the menu on the invitation
- Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
- Tell us about vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
- Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We get there early, cook, carve and serve, then clear up.
Gluten-free rolls are available on request.
Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet
Catered or DIY? Catering means we do everything; DIY hire means you roast and carve yourself. For bigger events, catering is generally the easier choice. Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.
Why us?
- Planned to your running order
- Carved by our chef in front of your guests
- No surprises: everything in writing

Questions from Blackboys
Is Blackboys too small for a hog roast?
Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.
Is Blackboys close to London?
About 39 miles from central London, and we cover it as standard.
When do you start roasting?
A whole hog roasts for several hours, which is why we arrive hours ahead. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.
How much room do you need?
Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, and a way to wheel everything in. A picture helps.
How big a hog will we need?
Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will confirm everything in writing.
What comes with the hog roast?
Pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling in a soft roll. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.
Do you cover Blackboys?
Yes. We cover London and the South East, Blackboys and the rest of East Sussex included. Tell us the venue and we will quote.
Do we need our own staff?
We carve and serve for you, and we clear up when service is finished.
Before you choose a spot
Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:
- A level patch of lawn, patio or hardstanding
- A way to wheel the roaster to the spot
- A sheltered place for people to eat if it rains
If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

For planners, venues and organisers
Booking for a club or group? A single point of contact keeps things simple, particularly when timings shift.
Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it’s worth asking first. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.
Prices and what affects them
The price comes down to:
- Numbers
- Menu choices and extras
- Time on site
- Whether you want china
What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.
What to tell us
For a quick, accurate price, tell us:
- A picture of the cooking area
- Any venue rules
- Your menu choices
- The date and when you’d like to eat
For a quote, send us a few details: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Use our quote form.
Should I cook it myself?
Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.
Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.
The process
On the day, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. Around midsummer it stays light in Blackboys until about 9:15pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.
