How our hog roast hire works in Pett

A hog roast is one of the simplest ways to feed a crowd in Pett: one roast, slow-cooked for hours, carved in front of everyone. Everything comes with us, and our staff serve and clear. Typical bookings include work summer parties and garden parties and barbecues, serving crackling, rotisserie chicken and salads.

Somewhere as small as Pett, a field, yard or garden is often the spot. Tell us about narrow lanes or long drives, and level, firm ground is the key. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we will give you the allergen information for every dish.

A hog roast or other catering?

Catered or DIY? Catering means we do everything; DIY hire means you roast and carve yourself. Most hosts choose catering for anything bigger than a family party. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

Why Pett hosts choose us

  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • Served at the time you choose

For planners, venues and organisers

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers, sharing timings and a site plan.

Event organisers frequently ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Tell us what you need and we will tell you what we can send.

How the day works

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We agree exactly where before the day. Late September evenings in Pett lose the light at about 7:00pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We get the roaster going hours before you eat.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We clear up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot

Before you choose a spot

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • A level patch of lawn, patio or hardstanding
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Allergies and dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
  • Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • Remember that stuffing typically contains gluten, so check the allergen information

Expect us to be on site for much of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

Salads, coleslaw and potatoes make it a full meal.

Your questions about a hog roast in Pett

Which station is closest to Pett?

The closest is Three Oaks station, roughly 2.5 miles away.

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

Is mains power needed?

The roaster runs on gas, so we do not need mains power to cook. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

Our staff clear the serving area, so you are not left with the mess.

What meats can we have?

It’s built around the hog, with lamb and chicken as extras.

How does hog roast hire work?

We bring the roaster, roast the hog on site for hours, then our chef carves it and our staff serve, in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling.

Is crockery included?

We bring plates as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

What about coeliacs?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

What affects the price in Pett

Each price is built from:

  • Travel to Pett
  • How long the roast and service take

For larger numbers, a hog roast is usually good value, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.
