Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Next to ordering takeaway, the roast is an event in itself. Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

What you get with us

  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • No surprises: everything in writing
  • All the equipment comes with us
  • Serving and clearing done for you

Take a look at how we price and the cost guide.

How the day works

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. For an evening party in Matchams, think about light: it’s light until about 9:25pm in June but only about 7:10pm in late September. Lights by the food keep the party going.

  1. It starts with the date, the address and a rough guest list.
  2. You get a check on the date and the cooking spot, and a quote.
  3. On the day we arrive hours ahead and start the roast under cover.
  4. When it is time to eat, the chef carves and we serve.
  5. We pack away and leave the garden tidy.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

Planning for dietary needs

Most people love a hog roast, but it is pork. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled

Ensure the gate or side passage is open when we arrive, so we can wheel the equipment in.

Add coleslaw, salads and jacket potatoes to make it a full meal.

Hosting a hog roast party in Matchams

Matchams is in Hampshire. Matchams is well within our area for parties. Matchams is one of 683 towns and villages in Hampshire where we cater. Our bookings stretch from Matchams to Southampton (about 20 miles away).

If you had Avon Heath Country Park in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we can’t simply set up a roaster in a public park. The New Forest National Park is within about 6 miles of Matchams, so a garden party here comes with a lovely backdrop.

We bring hog roasts to parties all over BH24 and the streets around it. Streets in the area include Maple Walk, Ash Tree Close and Sycamore Way, and a party on any of them works with a garden, drive or yard for the roaster. Other places close to Matchams we cover include Avon Castle (1 mile north-east), St Ives (1 mile north), St Leonards (1 mile north-west) and Ashley Heath (2 miles north-west). We also serve nearby towns such as Totton (15 miles north-east), Lymington (12 miles east), New Milton (8 miles south-east), Ringwood (3 miles north-east), Barton on Sea (8 miles south-east) and Ashley (9 miles south-east).

A little further out are St Leonard's Hospital (1.7 miles west). Green spaces nearby include St Catherine's Hill and Blashford Lakes.

Planning the cooking spot

The cooking area is the main thing to plan. A quick checklist:

  • A step-free way into the garden
  • Neighbours warned about the smell
  • Space away from the house, fences, sheds and trees

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

Questions from Matchams

Could you cook in Avon Heath Country Park?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Do you cater at venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

Can you work around our timings?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we’ll fit around changes.

Is there a non-pork option?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. Halal meat isn’t something we offer.

How soon do you get booked up?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can often be booked at shorter notice. Send your date and we will check.

Will the smell bother the neighbours?

Give them a heads-up, especially if the roaster is near a fence.

Do you bring plates?

We bring plates as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

How we price a hog roast for your party

Your quote depends on:

  • Plates or china
  • Distance from us
  • The date and time of year
  • Access to the cooking area

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

What to tell us

To check the date and the space, tell us:

  • Your date and serving time
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Roughly how many people

Busy weekends book up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: send us your details through our quote form.
