Party hog roast in Whitstable

Party hog roast in Whitstable, slow-roasted on site

Hosting a party means juggling everything at once. With a hog roast, the food is sorted: we cook, carve and serve. Typical bookings include christenings and wedding anniversaries, with a vegan burger or sausage, crackling and hog roast rolls.

Birthdays, christenings and summer parties in Whitstable often happen at home or in a local hall. Either works, given an outdoor spot to cook. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we will tell you exactly what’s in each dish before you book.

How the day works

Serving is straightforward: the chef carves and the team serves, with the sides served alongside. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. In Whitstable, late May sunsets come at about 8:45pm and midsummer ones at about 9:15pm, so an early-evening carve is generally in daylight. After about 3:50pm in December, we need light to carve.

  1. Tell us about your party: date, address and numbers.
  2. We check the garden or drive and quote.
  3. We set up hours ahead.
  4. We carve and serve at food time.
  5. We clear the serving area and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Name a contact for the day
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains

Planning help

The menu, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Vegetarians get halloumi and vegetable skewers, a hot, filling option of their own.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

For vegans, there’s a vegan burger or sausage in a roll, so nobody misses out.

Allergies and dietary needs

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Request gluten-free rolls
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled
  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans

Have a word with the neighbours first: the roast cooks for hours.

Bunting or festoon lights near the serving table make a lovely party setting.

Organising for someone else?

If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, whether you’re a planner, a PA or on a committee, let us know who we’ll deal with on the day. We’ll keep you both updated.

Venues frequently have rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

Before you choose a spot

It is worth planning the cooking area in advance. We look for:

  • Space away from the house, fences, sheds and trees
  • Neighbours warned about the smell
  • Access for the roaster through a gate or passage

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

What we serve

  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Crackling
  • Coleslaw
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Salads
  • Jacket potatoes
  • Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

What a hog roast costs

We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:

  • Numbers
  • Time on site
  • The journey to the venue
  • Which meats and sides you choose

Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. Every event gets its own quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

What to tell us

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Useful details:

  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • What the outdoor space is like
  • Your menu choices
  • The address or postcode

We need a few details to quote: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Fill in our quote form.

Whitstable parties: what to know

Whitstable is about 6 miles north-west of Canterbury, in Kent. We’re happy to travel to Whitstable for parties. Whitstable is one of 922 places in Kent where we cater. You can also see our page for Canterbury, about 6 miles away.

Guests arriving by train should know that Whitstable station is in Whitstable itself. A green space like Foxes Cross Bottom is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, usually the council’s. Near the coast, within about a mile, gardens can catch the wind, so we plan a sheltered spot.

We cater parties across the CT5 postcode area and the streets around it. Local streets include High Street, Station Road and Cranleigh Gardens; a party on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Being close to the A299 and A2990, Whitstable is easy for us to reach for your party. We also bring hog roasts to parties in Tankerton (1 mile north-east), Chestfield (1 mile east), Swalecliffe (2 miles east), Radfall (2 miles south-east) and Yorkletts (2 miles south-west). We also serve nearby towns such as Canterbury (6 miles south-east), Margate (15 miles east), Sittingbourne (13 miles west), Faversham (7 miles west), Herne Bay (5 miles east) and Minster (11 miles north-west).

A little further out are Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital (1 mile north-east) and Tankerton Castle (0.8 miles north). Green spaces nearby include West Blean and Thornden Woods.

  • Schools near Whitstable include Whitstable Junior School (less than half a mile north-west)
  • Pubs nearby include Whitstable Social Club pub (less than half a mile north-west)

Whitstable: your questions answered

We’re gathering after a service at Church of St John (Methodist): can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes, of course. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

When do you start roasting?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, which is why we arrive hours ahead. We work back from your serving time.

Is our garden suitable?

Often, yes, if there is a level spot away from the house and trees, and a way to wheel the equipment through. Send us a picture.

What should we sort out beforehand?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We will bring the rest.

Is there a non-pork option?

We can add lamb or chicken, plus halloumi skewers for vegetarians and a vegan burger or sausage. Halal meat is not something we offer.

Do you clear up?

Our staff clear up after service, and leave the area tidy.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is normally easier.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
