Party hog roast in Yelsted, carved to order

A big birthday deserves a centrepiece, and a whole hog roasting in the garden is exactly that. The smell sets the mood. Popular choices include rotisserie chicken, crackling and jacket potatoes, and we’re regularly asked to cater summer parties in the garden and ruby, golden and diamond anniversaries.

In a small place like Yelsted, a party in the garden or a nearby field is often the plan. Let us know about access, and we’ll plan the route. The carving happens right in front of your guests, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Yelsted parties: what to know

Yelsted is about 3 miles south-east of Gillingham, in Kent. We cater parties across Yelsted and nearby. We cater all 922 towns and villages in Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Canterbury, about 20 miles away.

A green space like Stockbury Hill Wood is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, usually the council’s. Yelsted is within about 5 miles of the Kent Downs National Landscape, so a garden party here comes with a lovely backdrop.

For parties in ME9, we just need to know where the roaster can cook and a serving time. From Yelsted Road and Yelsted Lane or anywhere nearby, we’ll bring the roaster to you. Neighbouring places where we cater parties include Stockbury (1 mile east), Meresborough (1 mile north), Hartlip (1 mile north-east), Lower Hartlip (2 miles north-east) and Rainham (2 miles north). We also serve nearby towns such as Maidstone (6 miles south-west), Sittingbourne (5 miles east), Gravesend (12 miles north-west), Faversham (12 miles east), Northfleet (14 miles north-west) and Minster (10 miles north-east).

Other landmarks nearby include KIMS hospital (4 miles south-west). Within reach you will find Detling Hill.

  • Nearby schools include Leigh Academy Rainham (2.2 miles north)

Working with your venue

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Tell us what you need and we will confirm what we can provide.

For events on land you don’t own, such as a park or field, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Yelsted: your questions answered

Do you cater at venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We’ll follow the site rules.

How far is Yelsted from London?

About 33 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Is clearing up included?

Plates come as standard and our staff clear the serving area.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it’s several hours. You’ll know our arrival time in advance.

Should we warn the neighbours?

Let them know in advance.

What about guests who don’t eat pork?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. Halal meat is not something we offer.

Do you cover Yelsted?

Yes, Yelsted is in our area. Send us the address and we will check the date.

Do we need a marquee for a party hog roast?

The roaster has its own cover; plan shelter for guests in bad weather.

Looking after everyone

You’ll get allergen information for everything we serve. To make the most of it:

  • Halal is not offered, so arrange it separately if needed
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Request gluten-free rolls
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans

We get there early to start the roast, so it is cooking when guests arrive.

Add chicken for younger or fussier guests.

Full catering or machine hire?

You could go for a cold buffet, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience, especially outdoors.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

How the day works

People love watching the carving: our chef carves the pork in front of the queue, and the crackling is shared out so everyone gets some. For an evening party in Yelsted, think about light: it’s light until about 9:15pm in June but only about 7:00pm in late September. A string of lights over the serving table works wonders.

  1. Send a photo of where the roaster could go.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. On the day, we roast slowly under cover.
  4. We serve when you are ready.
  5. We leave the garden tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Think about shelter for your guests
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
