How our wedding hog roast works in Dorchester

A hog roast gives your wedding a centrepiece: guests gather, the chef carves and the crackling disappears fast. It is food and a bit of theatre. We are frequently asked to cater intimate weddings and post-wedding gatherings, serving salads, halloumi skewers and new potatoes.

Rural weddings around Dorchester have a magic of their own, and slow-roasted pork carved for guests adds to it. Plan firm ground and a route for our vehicle. You’ll know what’s included before booking: the date, the serving time, the menu and the plates.

FAQs for Dorchester

How far is Dorchester from London?

About 47 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Is Dorchester too small for a hog roast?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can we have a hog roast as the main meal?

Many couples do exactly that, with alternatives for non-pork eaters.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We do not offer halal meat.

What space does the roaster need?

A level, open area outdoors with room for the roaster, a gazebo and a carving table, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We will confirm the space with your quote.

Do we need to provide electricity?

The roaster runs on gas, so we do not need mains power to cook. Power can help with lighting after dark.

What’s included?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.

How do we prepare?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

How the day works

We get there well ahead of service, because a whole hog takes hours to roast. The smell generally brings people over long before we carve. For a summer wedding in Dorchester, the sun sets at about 9:25pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, which means an evening hog roast is usually served in daylight in high summer. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it is dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. Send us the date, venue and guest numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon; our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we leave quietly.

How to prepare

  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment

Organising for someone else?

Planning on behalf of a committee? One clear contact makes everything easier, particularly when timings shift.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Tell us what you need and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

Allergies and dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us
  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Count non-pork eaters, so we can add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

Running late? A slow roast can wait a little. Your coordinator can keep us posted.

Some couples add lights around the serving area.

Catered or do it yourself?

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Prices and what affects them

Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • The number of people
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Travel to Dorchester
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays

The main driver is numbers: bigger groups generally cost less per head, since much of the cost is fixed.
