Looking after everyone

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Some ideas:

  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Collect dietary needs with RSVPs
  • Request gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Share the menu with your venue coordinator

Give us your venue coordinator’s details, so we can sort the cooking spot and timings with them.

For a sit-down meal, ask for china, as an extra.

Wedding hog roast in Gravel Castle, carved to order

Not every guest eats pork, so we plan for that: lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We don’t offer halal meat. We serve salads, carved roast pork and rotisserie chicken, and we are regularly asked to cater relaxed, low-key weddings and evening food after the first dance.

Rural weddings around Gravel Castle have a magic of their own, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan a firm route in, especially if it rains. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

How it works

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We’ll agree the spot with you beforehand. At midsummer, sunset in Gravel Castle is about 9:15pm, which helps us time evening food around your photos. Sunset is around 8:45pm in late May and 7:00pm in late September.

  1. Send us the date, venue and guest numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We fit timings around your running order.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Getting ready for the day

  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees

Full catering or machine hire?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You cook and carve it yourself; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Space, access and the venue

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • A safe distance from marquee walls, buildings and trees
  • Power for lights in the evening
  • A level spot near, but not too near, the marquee

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before booking.

Popular choices

  • Spit-roast lamb
  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Crackling
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Roast or jacket potatoes
  • Hog roast rolls
  • New potatoes
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Salads
  • Vegan option (Ve)

For planners, venues and organisers

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. We will keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

If you’re booking for a workplace, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We will fit in with site rules.
