Wedding hog roast in Plaxtol

Wedding hog roast in Plaxtol, carved to order

Couples book a hog roast for the main meal, the evening or both. The hog roasts slowly at your venue through the afternoon, then carve at the time you’ve set. For blessings and renewals and weddings in a marquee, we can cook carved roast pork, salads and halloumi skewers.

There is something special about a country wedding near Plaxtol, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan firm ground and a route for our vehicle. We bring the people to serve and clear up, so you’re not left handing out rolls.

A closer look at the menu

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Everything goes into a soft roll, easy to eat standing up. Ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Crunchy coleslaw suits roast pork, while salads and potatoes make a plated meal.

What the cooking area needs

Most outdoor spaces can work if a few things are right. Here’s what helps:

  • Approval from the venue or marquee supplier
  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • A serving area close to where guests eat

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Should I cook it myself?

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what affects the price:

  • Access to the cooking area
  • How many people are eating
  • The date and time of year
  • Whether you want china

Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so we list each one in the quote. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Details that help

When you get in touch, please mention:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • The date and time of the event
  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

Not sure how many to cater for? A rough figure is fine for a first quote, then confirm closer to the date. Fill in our quote form.

Plaxtol: your questions answered

Do you cater at venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Which station is closest to Plaxtol?

Borough Green & Wrotham station, about 2.4 miles north of the centre.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. Serving inside is often possible, with the venue’s agreement.

How do you work out quantities?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we will talk it through when we quote.

Can we have both pork and lamb?

Yes, spit-roast lamb can go alongside the pork.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We do not offer halal meat.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

It works well as a relaxed main meal, with lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside.

What should we sort out beforehand?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We’ll bring the rest.

A hog roast compared with other options

Compared with pizza or other evening vans, carving serves a lot of people fast. Numbers make the biggest difference: the price per head typically falls as numbers rise, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

Why us?

  • Planned to your running order
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • Crackling for everyone who wants it

Read how we price or our hog roast cost guide.

Planning for dietary needs

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Give final numbers in good time
  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen list
  • If any guests need halal food, arrange it separately

Running late? A slow roast can wait a little. Just keep us informed.

Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in evening photos; tell your venue or marquee supplier.

What happens on the day

The roaster cooks outdoors, on a level, open spot under cover, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. Golden-hour photos in Plaxtol at midsummer come around 9:20pm, which helps us time evening food around your photos. In late May, sunset is about 8:50pm, and in late September about 7:00pm.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. We cook through the day and serve right on cue.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

Preparing for the day

  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
