Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • Request gluten-free rolls if needed

You will not have to think about the food. We arrive hours before serving, roast through the day and carve on cue.

Gluten-free rolls can be provided for the evening food.

About our wedding hog roast in Roke

Couples book a hog roast for the main meal, the evening or both. The hog roasts slowly at your venue through the afternoon, then carve at the time you’ve set. Popular choices include carved roast pork, new potatoes and rotisserie chicken, and we’re often booked for barn and farm weddings and the main wedding meal.

There is something special about a country wedding near Roke, and slow-roasted pork carved for guests adds to it. Plan a firm route in, especially if it rains. We bring the people to serve and clear up, so you are not left handing out rolls.

A hog roast compared with other options

If your venue does its own catering, check whether you can bring in a hog roast. There may be a fee. Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

A closer look at the menu

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb cooks slowly like the hog, carved to order at the serving station, frequently with mint sauce.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

For vegetarians, halloumi and vegetable skewers are cooked separately from the meat, so they get something hot and satisfying too.

Prices and what affects them

The price comes down to:

  • Distance from us
  • Crockery choices
  • Season and day of the week
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, and the quote reflects that.

Getting an accurate quote

To get the best quote, tell us:

  • What the outdoor space is like
  • Where the event is
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • The date and time of the event

The quickest way to get a price is to send us your date, venue and numbers. A picture of where the roaster could go helps us check the space. Fill in our quote form.

Step by step

A typical booking goes like this: we arrive, set up under cover and start roasting, the pork cooks slowly for hours, and our chef carves it when you are ready. Evening food at a Roke wedding often goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:25pm at midsummer and 7:10pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

  1. Choose the main meal, the evening food or both.
  2. You get a quote listing menu, staff and plates.
  3. We confirm the cooking spot and access with the venue.
  4. We arrive early and roast slowly on site.
  5. We carve and serve, then clear away.

Getting ready for the day

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

Roke questions

Is Roke too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Is Roke close to London?

About 44 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Will there be enough to go round?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we will talk it through when we quote.

Is there a non-pork option?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. Please note we do not offer halal meat.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Do we need to provide electricity?

The roaster runs on gas, so we do not need mains power to cook. Power can help with lighting after dark.

How do we prepare?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

Do you do evening food?

Yes, evening food is very popular. Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling go down well after dancing.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Permission for outside catering
  • Light near the carving station after dark
  • Serving inside the marquee or barn if allowed

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.
