How our film set catering works in Bopeep

Some locations near Bopeep are a long way from food, so hot food at base matters. Whether it’s crew appreciation lunches and long shoot days, we will put together a menu of rotisserie chicken, salads and hog roast rolls and more.

Shoots in Bopeep often use streets, yards and car parks as unit bases. The location manager will agree where we set up, frequently with council permission. The carving happens right in front of your crew, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling, and nothing sits in a hot cabinet.

Prices and what affects them

We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:

  • Access to the cooking area
  • Time on site
  • Whether you want china
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays

A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

Details that help

To get the best quote, send us:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Dietary requirements
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo
  • The venue or postcode

Planning ahead? Popular dates fill up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Send us your date for a quote: use our quote form.

A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with a full location caterer, a hog roast suits single days and smaller crews. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. Every event gets its own quote, with everything listed.

Why Bopeep hosts choose us

Allergies and dietary needs

Some crew will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans
  • Label the alternatives clearly
  • Post allergen details at base

We serve quickly on the call.

Ask for gluten-free rolls.

What we serve, dish by dish

Crackling

Long, slow roasting turns the skin into crackling, and there’s a piece for everyone who wants it.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

For vegetarians, halloumi and vegetable skewers are cooked separately from the meat, so they get something hot and satisfying too.

How the day works

The secret is time: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. Summer shoots near Bopeep have light until about 9:20pm, so a wrap party can run into the evening.

  1. Production sends us the location and call times.
  2. We check access to base and quote.
  3. We set up at base and roast through the morning.
  4. We serve when lunch is called.
  5. We clear our spot.

Preparing for the day

  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains

Bopeep questions

Could you cook in Hewitt's Chalk Bank?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Check with them first.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Is there a non-pork option?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. We don’t provide halal meat.

Where does the hog roast go?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. A picture helps.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain is not a problem for the roast. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

How much does a hog roast cost?

Each event is priced on its own, based on numbers, menu, service time and distance. Ask us for a quote.

What if things run late?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and we can hold the roast for a while if the day runs behind.

What do people get?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.

Planners, venues and businesses

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and tell us what they ask for.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so check before booking. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Before you choose a spot

The cooking area is the main thing to plan. Check these:

  • A level area at base
  • The location manager’s agreement
  • A contact in production

Bopeep is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
