Film set catering in Skittle Green, slow-roasted on site

On a long shoot day near Skittle Green, a hot lunch on time matters. A hog roast works well at base: it roasts through the morning and is carved fast when lunch is called. Whether it is crew thank-you days and unit base lunches, we will put together a menu of halloumi skewers, a vegan option and salads for your crew.

Near Skittle Green, crews may be miles from anywhere to eat, so hot food at base is a big help. The carving happens right in front of your crew, so every roll gets hot pork and a piece of crackling.

What comes off the roaster

Crackling

Crackling takes hours to get right, and a whole hog roasted slowly gets it just right.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

A hog roast roll is designed to be eaten in the hand. Gluten-free rolls can be provided on request.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

You’ll get allergen information for everything we serve. To make the most of it:

  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Post allergen details at base
  • Collect crew dietary needs from the call sheet
  • Stuffing generally contains gluten

Name a contact for the day, generally locations or the production office.

China crockery is available on request.

The process

Your timings come first. If things run late, we can hold the cooked roast for a while before carving, so keep us posted on the day. At midsummer, daylight in Skittle Green lasts until about 9:25pm, so a wrap party can run into the evening.

  1. Production sends us the location and call times.
  2. We check access to base and quote.
  3. The roast starts early.
  4. We serve when lunch is called.
  5. We pack away straight after.

Getting ready for the day

  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment

What a hog roast costs

Here’s what affects the price:

  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • The journey to the venue
  • Site access
  • Which meats and sides you choose

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. There is no one-size price, so we quote each one individually.

Details that help

To get the best quote, send us:

  • What the outdoor space is like
  • The address or postcode
  • Rough numbers
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china

Planning ahead? Popular dates fill up early, especially summer Saturdays and December Fridays. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: use our quote form.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to grilling to order, carving is quicker for big numbers. The main driver is numbers: bigger groups generally cost less per head, since much of the cost is fixed.

Why us?

  • All the equipment comes with us
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Planned to your running order

For planners, venues and organisers

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it’s worth asking first. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Skittle Green questions

Is Skittle Green close to London?

Roughly 37 miles from the centre of London.

Do you cater at venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

How much does a hog roast cost?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we will send a price.

Can you roast in the rain?

Rain does not stop the cooking. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

Can you set up at the unit base?

Not much: a level area at base, agreed with locations.

Can you cater for vegans on set?

There are chicken, lamb, vegetarian and vegan options. We don’t offer halal meat.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

Outside, always. The food can be carried in and served indoors where the venue allows.

Can you do gluten-free?

Gluten-free rolls are available on request. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.
