Slow-roasted pork in Skittle Green

How our wedding hog roast works in Skittle Green

As a main meal, the hog roast is served on plates: roast pork, crackling and a choice of sides, with china available on request. Whether it is the day after the wedding and vow renewals and blessings, we’ll put together a menu of salads, spit-roast lamb and halloumi skewers.

Near Skittle Green, weddings are frequently in fields, barns or gardens. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Let us know about access and ground. Everything is cooked on the day, at your venue, low and slow, for hours, and carved only when you’re ready to eat.

  • Lighting for evening service
  • A short walk from the serving station to the guests
  • A level spot near, but not too near, the marquee

Prices and what affects them

We do not use a fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • The date and time of year
  • Access to the cooking area
  • The number of people
  • Whether you want china

Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Questions from Skittle Green

Is Skittle Green too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Will there be enough to go round?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we’ll talk it through when we quote.

Do we need our own staff?

No need for your own staff: our chef carves and our team serves and clears.

Can we add a second roast?

Yes, spit-roast lamb can go alongside the pork.

What do people get?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. We can often serve indoors if the venue agrees.

Do you need power or water?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Tell us what’s available and we will plan around it.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Rolls or plates? Rolls are quicker; plates suit a sit-down meal, and gluten-free rolls are available on request.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Sides include salads, coleslaw, new potatoes and roast or jacket potatoes, depending on the season and the occasion.

Step by step

The secret is time: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin crisps into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. At a December wedding in Skittle Green, it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so the route from the reception to the hog roast needs lighting.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. We roast during the ceremony and drinks, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We clear away once everyone has eaten.

Planning help

Working with your venue

Venues frequently have rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Should I cook it myself?

Full catering or machine hire? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card
  • Request gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Note which guests do not eat pork, for lamb, chicken or a vegetarian choice

Our staff serve and clear quietly, so the party carries on around us.

Salads, new potatoes and roast potatoes make a full wedding breakfast.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
